As a long-time Marvel enthusiast who has followed the escapades of the mighty Thor since his Mjolnir-wielding debut, I can’t help but feel a surge of excitement about the potential for a fifth Thor film. The rumors have been swirling like Odin’s wisdom, and the prospect of George Miller taking the helm is enough to make even the most skeptical fan shiver with anticipation.
As a Marvel enthusiast, I’ve been absolutely thrilled by the torrent of news in the Marvel Cinematic Universe lately! The unveiling of the trailer for the MCU’s Thunderbolts movie, along with the Venom: The Last Dance trailer revealing the villain Knull, the symbiote god, has certainly stirred up a lot of anticipation among fans. Yet, there’s one film that remains unconfirmed but has sparked much debate recently – Thor 5!
Discussions are ongoing about a possible fifth “Thor” movie, but at this stage, Taika Waititi, who directed “Thor: Ragnarok” and “Thor: Love and Thunder,” is not expected to return as director. Instead, George Miller, director of “Furiosa,” has shown interest in the project. The conclusion of “Thor: Love and Thunder” left several questions and plot points unresolved. One intriguing hint dropped was the potential appearance of Hercules, portrayed by Russell Crowe in the film, who is the son of Zeus. If Hercules were to reappear in a fifth “Thor” movie, it could lead to an alliance with Thor to confront a significant danger and form the MCU’s rendition of The God Squad.
The God Squad, EXPLAINED
In the well-known comic book event known as “Secret Invasion,” the gods residing on Earth convened to select champions capable of confronting an impending alien invasion. Heroes such as Hercules, Amadeus Cho, Ajak, Snowbird, Atum, and Amatsu-Mikoboshi were chosen to unite and battle the deities of the Skrulls. After successfully defeating the Skrull gods, Mikoboshi decided to remain behind while the other heroes returned to Earth. This decision was puzzling at first, but it wasn’t until much later that his return was explained.
As a fervent admirer, I find myself recounting the tale where Mikoboshi, the Chaos King, returns from his slumber, driven by an unquenchable desire to revert the universe into oblivion. Being a being born of the VOID, he embodies the darkness that serves as a contrast for Eternity’s existence.
Mikoboshi’s strength overwhelmed his adversaries repeatedly during the cosmic struggle. With every deity he vanquished, his power intensified, along with his forces. He successfully enlisted Abomination into his cause and deployed him against Doctor Strange, overpowering the sorcerer when he was momentarily diverted. Furthermore, Mikoboshi utilized the Carrion Crow, the Undead’s Consumer, in combat against the rejuvenated X-Men, who were on a quest to find Destiny’s diary, which contained secrets about defeating Mikoboshi and guidance for their future battles.
Mikoboshi felt a sense of joy as he witnessed Gaea’s gradual decay, the ancient goddess who birthed the deities themselves. In the final confrontation, the Divine Team engaged in a grand, heroic battle. As hope seemed to fade and Mikoboshi threatened to ingest all existence, it was unveiled that instead of consuming everything, he was imprisoned in a barren universe akin to Marvel’s own realm, where Amadeus Cho and Galactus discovered and contained the Chaos King within.
The God Squad in the MCU
One of the fascinating things about this squad is how many members of both iterations have already been introduced into the MCU. Aside from the obvious Thor and Hercules, Sersi was a big part of The Eternals. Doctor Strange and The Abomination have both had their roles in the MCU as well, and with the X-Men and the Silver Surfer and Galactus all set to make their MCU debuts in upcoming films, the foundations for this team have been set. The question is how to bring the team together, and what threat they should face.
Instead of getting excited about the prospect of Mikoboshi appearing on the big screen, there’s a possibility that hints regarding the team’s assembly might emerge from another upcoming film, “Venom: The Last Dance”. Similar to Mikoboshi, Knull is an ancient entity born in the void before creation. He accumulated power by slaying one of the Celestials who birthed the universe, and he was also responsible for creating the Necrosword, commonly known as All-Black the Necrosword in comics. The sword was wielded by Gorr, both in the comics and the Marvel Cinematic Universe film “Thor: Love and Thunder”, causing Gorr to become more corrupted with each use until it was ultimately destroyed. Knull used this sword during his invasion of Earth, but Eddie Brock eventually took over as the new King in Black and defeated both the sword and Knull.
In the event that Knull appears in “Venom: The Last Dance,” with whispers suggesting a potential appearance within the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU), it’s plausible that the immense darkness and power Knull embodies could compel Hercules, Thor, and other divine heroes to unite in the MCU. If Thor’s narrative unfolds further, either before or after “Avengers: Secret Wars,” a cosmic threat such as Knull or Mikoboshi might be what he requires to propel the story forward. In such a scenario, it could only be by forming the God Squad that he would be adequately equipped to confront this impending doom.
