Ubisoft Panic: Tokyo Games Show & Assassin's Creed Shadows Preview Cancelled

As a long-time fan who has watched Ubisoft rise and fall like the tides, I must say that 2024 has been a rollercoaster ride for the company. The cancellation of press previews for Assassin’s Creed Shadows and bailing out of the Tokyo Game Show just adds more turbulence to an already stormy year.

It seems that Ubisoft is experiencing some tough times in Japan, as they have reportedly canceled press previews for Assassin’s Creed Shadows and decided not to participate in the Tokyo Game Show.

The latest news deals another setback to Ubisoft’s standing, following a challenging summer that also saw an attempted takeover.

Ubisoft’s Public Relations team hasn’t issued any further statements regarding the news, except for an apology on their Ubisoft Japan page about cancelling participation in the Tokyo Game Show with little warning.

According to the translation, the phrasing appears deliberately unspecific, implying that the decision was made for a number of different reasons.

The French company, regarding the rumors of cancelled press previews for “Assassin’s Creed Shadows”, hasn’t made any comments on the matter.

It remains unclear if the planned release of Assassin’s Creed Shadows in November will go ahead as scheduled. The gaming community eagerly awaits any updates from Ubisoft regarding this much-anticipated game, hoping that the launch won’t be delayed.

How Did 2024 Go Wrong At Ubisoft

It would have been tough to predict that 2024 for Ubisoft would turn out as it has, given their initial plans in January. Their focus was on the arena shooter game XDefiant, along with highly anticipated RPGs like Star Wars Outlaws and Assassin’s Creed Shadows.

XDefiant completed its challenging production phase in May and managed to amass over 8 million players just a week after its launch. However, in August, Ubisoft had to let go of some members from the XDefiant development team.

The current number of simultaneous players struggles to surpass 20,000, and whispers from within suggest that the entire project could meet a fate similar to Concord unless Season 3 manages to draw players back.

Ubisoft heavily invested in Star Wars Outlaws, but its August 30th launch was met with disappointing results. Contrasting with this, Star Wars: Jedi Survivor outperformed the new UK open-world RPG in terms of sales figures.

With whispers of Outlaws‘ struggles spreading, I started seeing folks unloading their Ubisoft shares, sending its value plummeting down to levels not seen in a decade.

Just a fortnight since its launch, a Slovakian investment group, AJ Investments and Partners, penned an open missive to Ubisoft’s shareholders, urging them to consider either privatizing the gaming giant or making way for a buyout. As a gamer, I can only hope that this call sparks some change in the direction of even greater gaming experiences!

restructuring through layoffs, divesting intellectual properties, and changing leadership teams.

As a dedicated gamer, I can’t help but notice that Ubisoft often finds itself in the thick of things, be it drama or management issues. But today, with what’s happening in Japan, I find myself reassured rather than worried. It seems unlikely that Ubisoft will fold anytime soon.

Fans of Assassin’s Creed are disappointed and view Ubisoft as more of a troublemaker than a reliable provider of outstanding games, due to the lingering doubt about the series.
