Most Iconic Anime Alien Girls

Most Iconic Anime Alien Girls

Key Takeaways

  • Sci-fi and anime often intersect with characters like alien girls making iconic appearances in popular shows
  • Some sci-fi anime feature alien characters who are love interests or powerful beings, adding depth and diversity
  • Alien girls in anime range from peaceful to mischievous, showcasing a variety of personalities and storylines

Oh, what a delightful journey through time and space this has been! From the fiery spirit of Ryoko to the malevolent Queen Beryl, and not forgetting the mischievous Lum, these alien ladies have certainly left their mark on anime history.

Science fiction and anime often complement each other beautifully, although not every show falls neatly within the genre. Many series incorporate scientific elements in unique ways. For instance, “Ghost in the Shell” and “Akira” are undeniably sci-fi, with their cyborgs and experiments. On the other hand, “Sword Art Online” skillfully combines fantasy and sci-fi by embedding its fantastical world within a virtual MMORPG.

Instead of merely sprinkling a dash of science fiction by incorporating an occasional alien character, various genres – be it comedy, romance, or harem shows – may unexpectedly feature extraterrestrial inhabitants among their casts. In some cases, these characters can become well-known figures, such as the renowned anime alien heroines. If people were previously unaware of their presence, they’d soon discover them everywhere.

That’s not to say there aren’t any sci-fi stories being made. It’s just that, if they do involve aliens, they’re not usually arriving in the form of babes wanting to learn about this human thing called “kissing” from some random joe. Still, whether they live up to that archetype, or go beyond it, there’s still room on this list for new entries. So, alongside some format changes to bring it up to date, here are some more top alien girls in anime.

12 Hyatt

Excel Saga

  • Debut: Episode 2- “The Woman from Mars”

Initially, the nature of Hyatt is debatable based on the origin. In the original Koshi Rikdo’s ‘Excel Saga’ manga, she was simply a regular girl who joined the ACROSS organization following an advertisement. Conversely, in Shinichi ‘Nabeshin’ Watanabe’s ‘Excel Saga’ anime, she is depicted as a Martian princess discovered within the Puuchuu mothership. It appears that Rikdo allowed Watanabe some creative liberty for a sci-fi episode, leading to this discrepancy.

Despite this, she became known as Excel’s discreet accomplice. When Excel was causing a stir, she was usually the calm and rational voice. This might be why the leader of ACROSS, Il Palazzo, preferred her more. The downside is that he frequently suffers from severe coughing fits and often collapses multiple times during an episode. Despite its difficulties, it became part of her endearing qualities.

11 Mizuho Kazami

Please Teacher!

  • Debut: Episode 1- “Teach Me, Teacher!”

It’s not unexpected to discover that some extraterrestrial females are romantic interests for ordinary men. This trope has been around for quite some time, even being featured prominently in well-known science fiction series such as Star Trek. Although the anime series Please Teacher may not be a major player in the sci-fi romance genre, its title character certainly stood out due to her unique design.

Mizuho is an extraterrestrial assigned by the Galactic Federation to monitor humans. To maintain her hidden origin, she disguises herself. However, she confides in Kei, our main character, when she takes on the role of his homeroom teacher. Now, it’s up to Kei to safeguard Mizuho’s secret, while she assists him with his unusual freezing episodes called ‘standstills’. This setup isn’t so bad for a guy with a crush on his teacher!

10 Musubi

Sekirei

  • Debut: Episode 1- “Sekirei”

Although the concept in “Please Teacher” might seem unusual, it’s essentially simple: Kei conceals Mizuho’s secret, and she tends to his health issues in return. The plot of “Sekirei” introduces a layer of complexity for its lead character, Minato, when a woman named Musubi, belonging to an extraterrestrial race known as the Sekirei, falls upon him. These Sekirei require a human with unique genes, known as Ashikabi, to unlock their powers.

In the grip of a tender kiss, Minato finds himself compelled to support Musubi in a combat tournament arranged by the enigmatic MBI Corporation. Unlike others who claim him as an Ashikabi, she was the first and remains steadfastly loyal. Moreover, she always seeks his approval before bestowing her powers with each passionate kiss prior to battle. She embodies the dreams of those who value politeness and respect.

9 Lala Deviluke

To-Love Ru

  • Debut: Episode 1- “The Girl Who Fell From the Sky”

It’s not that every alien girl is so welcome, specifically Lala Deviluke, an alien princess who fled her planet to avoid a forced marriage. Despite his longing for his school crush Haruna and his shyness, Rito Yūki finds himself in a peculiar situation when he accidentally meets Lala. To complicate matters further, Lala declares that she intends to marry him to prevent being taken back by her fellow Devilukeans.

Exasperated, Rito finds himself guiding Lala through the ways of Earth life and portraying a content couple for Lala’s species. Notably, Lala’s father, who governs the majority of known galaxies, is watching closely. No easy task, indeed!

8 Caulifa & Kale

Dragon Ball Super

  • Debut: Episode 88- “Gohan and Piccolo- Master and Pupil Clash in Max Training!” (Caulifla), Episode 89- “A Mysterious Beauty Appears! The Enigma of the Tien Shin-Style Dojo?” (Kale)

In the universe of Dragon Ball, Saiyans are among the most potent creatures, yet they’re quite rare. The vast majority of surviving Saiyans are male, while their female counterparts like Fasha, Gine, Forte, and Viola seem to be relics or have questionable status in the canon. While characters such as Pan might share some Saiyan heritage, they don’t exhibit the same combat abilities as their male counterparts, hurling Kamehamehas, for instance. This paved the way for Dragon Ball Super to introduce Caulifla and Kale into the series.

In simpler terms, we have characters from Universe 6 known as Saiyans, who engage in combat with Goku and his team during the Tournament of Power. Among them is Caulifla, strong enough to obliterate half of the entire arena and possibly attain Super Saiyan 3. Kale, on the other hand, resembles male Broly as she’s Universe 6’s Legendary Super Saiyan, capable of growing stronger and going berserk. To make matters worse, these two females can merge into a formidable entity called Kefla, possessing strength comparable to Goku at his peak. Consequently, they can either be valuable allies or pose significant threats.

7 Aisha Clanclan

Outlaw Star

  • Debut: Episode 3- “Into Burning Space”

In the Toonami era, Outlaw Star lost out to Cowboy Bebop. Unlike its space western counterpart, it wasn’t as thought-provoking or introspective. However, it did possess one unique feature that Bebop lacked: an array of diverse alien species. One such character is Aisha Clanclan, who hails from the Ctarl-Ctarl race, a feline-like group capable of shifting shapes. Given her cunning, deceitful nature, and inflated ego, this ability seems fitting for Aisha. Initially, she was tasked with locating the Galactic Leyline on behalf of the Ctarl-Ctarl Empire.

Following Gene’s team portraying her unfavorably to their superiors, she chose to join his crew as a form of recompense. Contrary to her petite appearance, she demonstrates immense resilience by withstanding close-range gunfire and even immersing herself in molten lava. Moreover, she transforms into a tiger-like figure. Despite her strength, Aisha also shows compassionate qualities as she takes on the role of a protective elder sister towards co-lead Jim Hawking. Though others may be hesitant to work with her, Aisha consistently proves her worth and value to the crew, ultimately earning their acceptance.

6 Kagura

Gintama

  • Debut: Episode 1- “You B******s! Do You Even Have a Silver Soul?!”

In this unique setting, Gintama is set in a world where 19th-century Japan has been invaded by aliens called Amanto, leaving the Bakufu as a mere puppet government. Society becomes divided between humans and aliens, but the series manages to find humor even in such a situation. The main character, samurai Gintoki, runs a freelance business taking on various jobs for money. Strangely enough, his business starts to thrive when he acquires an apprentice, Shinpachi, and a powerful employee named Kagura joins him.

From the Yato Clan, she had a sorrowful childhood, marked by her brother Kamui’s attempts on their father Umibouzu’s life, causing Umibouzu to depart, sparing them from his violent outbursts. With both of them absent and her ailing mother passing away, she embarks on a new journey in the Earth realm. Her innocence often lands her in trouble, but her quick temper usually resolves such predicaments. However, her fiery demeanor makes her equally likely to strike Gintoki as their adversaries, thus posing a dual threat at his enterprise.

5 Haruko Haruhara

FLCL

  • Debut: Episode 1- “Fooly Cooly”

If traditional romantic characters don’t appeal to someone, they might find Haruko Haruhara more relatable. In the anime series FLCL, she leaves a lasting impact on protagonist Naota by running him over with her Vespa. After resuscitating him, she assaults him, harasses him, and disrupts his life in various ways. She does this all while searching for the energy being Atomsk in the name of the Galactic Space Police Brotherhood.

She isn’t known for her honesty and often causes more problems for Naota and Earth with her antics. Her actions aren’t high on her list of concerns, which makes her seem quite evil on paper. Yet, she pulls off her actions so smoothly that she made the original FLCL OVA a must-see. The show wouldn’t have been as captivating without her causing chaos. It would just be Fooly, lacking the Cooly.

4 Mihoshi

Tenchi Muyo

  • Debut: Episode 4- “Mihoshi Falls to the Land of Stars”

Tenchi Muyo features numerous alien females, either collaborating with Tenchi or vying for his affections. Some characters resonated more strongly than others, and Mihoshi, an unexpected favorite among longtime anime enthusiasts, is one such character. She serves in the Galaxy Police, once a highly competent officer until a devastating event brought her close to death. Despite being revived, this incident left her with a touch of clumsiness and forgetfulness.

Despite being known for her clumsiness, forgetfulness, and inability to focus on a single idea, she consistently achieves success due to an uncanny knack for influencing events, or simply put, her blunders often lead to good fortune. She also occasionally demonstrates her former intelligence in her work. Her character is divisive, with some finding her careless demeanor off-putting while others find it endearing. Regardless of whether she was a fan favorite, she stood out as one of the memorable characters in the series.

3 Ryoko

Tenchi Muyo

  • Debut:Tenchi Muyo! Ryo-Ohki OVA

Among all the diverse alien females in the anime series “Tenchi Muyo“, it’s Ryoko who was the initial one, and is frequently admired as the finest. Born from the DNA of the brilliant scientist Washu Hakubi and an aquatic extraterrestrial species called Masu, Ryoko evolved into a notorious space pirate. She was confined in a cave on Earth, but was accidentally released 700 years later by Tenchi, leading to the destruction of his school and the unveiling of his own half-alien ancestry at the same time.

The series could originate from a manga about harems, but Ryoko differs from the rest because she doesn’t fit the stereotype of the ideal girl. Instead, she’s bold, reckless, quick-tempered, and consumes sake as if it were water. Yet, she harbors a tender affection for Tenchi, while simultaneously intimidating him. This duality is intriguing given that Ryoko is not your ordinary space pirate with a criminal past; she’s also someone who seeks out (and endures) pain. However, it’s important to note that neither Tenchi nor Ryoko are one-dimensional characters. Beneath their rough exteriors lies a heart of pure gold, which has garnered them a devoted fanbase spanning over several decades.

2 Queen Beryl

Sailor Moon

  • Debut: Episode 1- “Crybaby Usagi’s Magnificent Transformation”

Someone’s got to provide the evil for fighting in moonlight. Though Queen Beryl wasn’t always evil. It’s just that she let jealousy get the better of her when Prince Endymion chose Queen Serenity over her. She sides with Queen Metaria and the Dark Kingdom, killing the two before being killed herself by Sailor Venus. Revived in the 20th Century, she and her minions seek to revive Queen Metaria with the Silver Crystal and finish off the Sailor Scouts.

In the magical world of Sailor Moon, I can’t help but see Queen Beryl as the main villain. She’s the one we love to hate, always stirring up trouble for the Sailor Scouts, no matter if it’s in the original anime, the live-action series, or even the recently discovered Saban pilot. Whether she’s taking on a new form or just being her usual evil self, Queen Beryl is the epitome of a malevolent alien queen in anime, with everyone else seemingly playing second fiddle to her grand schemes.

1 Lum

Urusei Yatsura

  • Debut: Episode 1- “I’m Lum-chan the Notorious!”

Despite Lala, Mizuho, and others achieving great fame, they all tread on paths paved by the character named Lum, a creation of manga artist Rumiko Takahashi. Lum, an oni-like alien, was the first extraterrestrial to disrupt a human’s life in such a dramatic way. Her mission was to help her people conquer Earth by defeating their human representative, Ataru, in a game of tag. However, when Ataru managed to grab her horns, Lum was obligated to concede defeat and fulfill his wish to marry him.

Apart from believing he desired marriage with her rather than Shinobu, his girlfriend, she now constantly interferes in his life, going to great lengths for her ‘Beloved’. Simultaneously, she metes out punishment if he shows affection towards Shinobu or other women. In fact, she became a recognizable character even before the series was widely known outside Japan, thanks to merchandise featuring her in a bikini. Consequently, she is undeniably the most iconic alien female character from anime.
