Metro Awakening Preview: The Closest To The Apocalypse You’ll Ever Want To Be

As a seasoned gamer who’s survived numerous gaming generations and apocalypses alike, I can confidently say that Metro Awakening has left an indelible mark on my post-apocalyptic soul. Having dipped my toes into VR gaming for the first time with this gem, I’m now a proud owner of a Meta Quest 3.

The upcoming VR game, Metro Awakening, is set within the popular post-apocalyptic series, introducing an entirely fresh narrative. This game is anticipated to hit shelves before the year ends, allowing players on PC, PlayStation, and Meta Quest platforms to immerse themselves in a chilling, mutant-infested journey, offering a bone-chilling, up-close experience.

At Gamescom in August, I got to test-drive an impressive trial version of Metro Awakening, which turned out to be my initial foray into the world of VR gaming. After that encounter, I found myself drawn to the immersive experience and eventually made a purchase – a Meta Quest 3.

Do with that information what you will.

Deep, Deep Down

The video game titled “Metro Awakening” takes place in the year 2028, approximately seven years prior to the occurrences depicted in “Metro Exodus,” the most recent main game released in 2019. In this game, players take on the role of Serdar, a survivor from the nuclear disaster, now living within Moscow’s grim and terrifying subway infrastructure.

In the role of Serdar, characters will journey through labyrinthine catacombs and passageways, frantically seeking his missing wife against the clock to rescue her. It embodies a classic Metro experience filled with mutated beasts, scarce supplies, and threats hiding in the shadows at every bend.

What immediately caught my attention as someone who’s been a fan of Metro for a long time was the genuine feel of the game. Vertigo Games has assembled it, and they’ve done an impressive job capturing the raw intensity of a Metro game in virtual reality. From the moment I completed the tutorial and found myself in Moscow’s metro system, I felt fully engrossed.

Artistically, it strongly resembles Metro Exodus, even down to the quality of its visuals. Since then, I’ve tried several VR games, but none have approached the immersive atmosphere found in Metro Awakening. The way it was put together is so impressive that the version I played felt ready for immediate release on the market.

Next-Generation Horror

In case you’ve felt uneasy about the spooky aspects of the Metro series, get ready for an even more chilling experience in Metro Awakening. I was startled by mutants, crawled under colossal spiders, and found myself battling a suffocating darkness with just a flickering torch and a makeshift lighter as my only tools.

In Metro Exodus, the handling of inventory, weapon usage, and equipment felt instinctive and effortless. I quickly mastered these aspects within just a short while, which left the clerk at the booth astonished since I had no prior experience with virtual reality gaming.

Metro Exodus: Awakening stays incredibly faithful to the franchise. Being an already immersive first-person shooter series, the VR perspective takes this immersion to a whole new level, making you feel like you’re right in the heart of the post-apocalyptic world. I found myself inspecting every corner and opening every container, checking my weapons and gear repeatedly to ensure I was always ready for action.

I haven’t been able to confirm how long the game is, but I’d assume it’s at least a few hours long. Beyond the launch of the game, I’m also not sure what’s coming next, but as soon as I have that information, I’ll happily share it. I’m hoping it doesn’t end the base game, because Metro Exodus had some fantastic expansions.

If you’ve been waiting for a solid new VR shooter, don’t sleep on Metro Awakening. It’s phenomenal.
