First gameplay trailer released for Hell is Us

As a seasoned gamer with decades of gaming under my belt, I must admit that the trailer for Hell is Us has piqued my interest like no other game in recent memory. The concept of a third-person action adventure game set in a country ravaged by civil war and inhabited by supernatural creatures is intriguing enough, but what truly caught my attention was the player-plattering approach to game design.

NACON’s latest release features the debut gameplay trailer for their upcoming third-person action-adventure title, Hell is Us, which takes players on a thrilling journey.

The trailer was featured during the State of Play presentation in September, and it certainly appears appetizing for those who enjoy such games. Here’s the trailer for your viewing pleasure:

Title Game: Hell is Us

The game adopts an innovative strategy in its design, often referred to as “player-driven exploration”. This concept is the polar opposite of “hand-holding”, which involves excessive explanation and delivering all information directly to players. Instead, developers of Hell is Us chose to return to the basics of classic adventure games by fostering curiosity and contemplation, while minimizing traditional guides. In this game, you won’t find extensive maps, quest indicators, or compasses pointing out every point of interest. Instead, you’ll need to trust your instincts, sharpen your observational skills, and exercise your logical reasoning to navigate through your adventure and uncover the mysteries hidden in these enigmatic lands.

Jonathan Jacques-Belletete, the Executive Creative Director and Art Director at Rogue Factor, shared additional details on the official PlayStation Blog. He explained that instead of following common practices, they aimed to present something strikingly unique with “Hell is Us”. Unlike many contemporary games that provide players with extensive maps, markers for quests, journals for quests, and continuous assistance, they opted to eliminate these traditional guides entirely.

Jacques-Belletete stated: “In ‘Hell is Us,’ there won’t be any magical maps, compasses, or markers pointing out your next objective. Nor will there be artificial guides to help you navigate. Instead, we encourage players to immerse themselves in the game world and use their own perception, logic, and instincts to advance. The surroundings aren’t just for decoration; they are meant to convey meaning. Therefore, it’s essential to listen carefully to what the Non-Player Characters (NPCs) say because what they tell you is genuine information about how to proceed in the game.

Hell is Us is set for a 2025 release, and will be coming to PC and consoles.
