AC Shadows is Hopefully Just Testing the Waters for Requested Settings

As a long-time Assassin’s Creed enthusiast with over a decade of gaming under my belt, I can confidently say that Ubisoft has been hitting it out of the park with their historical action-adventure series. From the Holy Land to modern-day London, the Assassin’s Creed universe has expanded and captivated millions of players worldwide. However, there are still a few settings that have remained elusive, and I, for one, am eagerly awaiting these long-demanded games.

Starting November 15th, devoted fans of the “Assassin’s Creed” series can traverse the rooftops of feudal Japan in the game “Assassin’s Creed Shadows”. Players will assume roles as the Japanese Shinobi Fujibayashi Naoe and the African Samurai Yasuke, both striving to uncover their destinies during Japan’s late Sengoku period. Although a delay has pushed back the release of “Assassin’s Creed Shadows”, Ubisoft studios continue to develop future “Assassin’s Creed” installments such as “Assassin’s Creed Jade” and “Assassin’s Creed Codename Hexe”. As February approaches for the release of “Shadows”, Ubisoft might want to explore creating games set in other eagerly awaited time periods and locations.

The World of Assassin’s Creed

Fans of the Assassin’s Creed series, ever since its first installment was released in 2007, have harbored dreams of various games set in lands beyond the medieval Holy Land. These ideas often sprang from the ending of the first game where the Apple of Eden shows a hologram of the world, indicating where other Pieces of Eden are located. Over the past 17 years, several games have delved into these locations, like Egypt in Assassin’s Creed Origins, New York in Assassin’s Creed 3, and France in Assassin’s Creed Unity, to mention a few. However, the locations shown on the Apple’s map were not the only settings fans envisioned for an Assassin’s Creed game.

For a long time, various settings for the popular game series Assassin’s Creed were primarily based on specific geographies and historical periods. People have been yearning to play the game in more contemporary settings for years, which was finally realized with the release of Assassin’s Creed Syndicate. Similarly, fans wanted to experience being Assassins during the Viking era, a wish that came true with Assassin’s Creed Valhalla. The Ming Dynasty China setting was another popular demand that was catered to in the side-scrolling format of Assassin’s Creed Chronicles. However, there are still numerous locations where fans eagerly anticipate playing as Assassins.

Possible Settings for Future Assassin’s Creed Games

In both “Assassin’s Creed 3” and “Rogue,” portions of the United States were depicted, but these games largely concentrated on the northeast. Many fans continue to yearn for an “Assassin’s Creed” title that delves into the Wild West. The possibilities are limitless for a “Red Dead Redemption”-like “Assassin’s Creed” game, with suggestions ranging from games set in 1800s California or amidst the battlegrounds of the U.S. Civil War. A more distinctive setting could be the Texas Revolution, where colonists fought for independence from Mexico, leading to the short-lived establishment of Texas as an independent nation. Since the Apple’s map indicated a Piece of Eden in Texas, this game could involve Santa Anna as a Templar hunting for that artifact during the war.

Another long-desired setting for an Assassin’s Creed game is Mongolia, set during the reign of the Mongol Empire in the 13th century. Most fans’ desire for this setting is based on this location’s connection to Assassin’s Creed 1 protagonist Altair Ibn-LaʼAhad and his fight against Genghis Khan. After Assassin’s Creed 1’s ending, Altair married Maria and had two sons, Darim and Sef. Together, they journeyed to Mongolia to aid fellow Assassin Qulan Gal in assassinating Genghis Khan. A Mongolian Assassin’s Creed game could have players embody Qulan Gal from his early years to a Master Assassin fighting alongside Altair and his family, culminating in Qulan Gal killing Genghis Khan with his bow.

A Central American Assassin’s Creed Game

One popular setting that fans have frequently asked for after “Assassin’s Creed Shadows” in Japan is one based on the Aztec and Mayan Empires of Central America. Following the successful representation of ancient civilizations in “Assassin’s Creed Origins,” “Odyssey,” and “Valhalla,” fans have been eagerly awaiting a similar portrayal of these empires. In terms of narrative, this setting could span several games, focusing on the 1500s and 1600s – a period marked by the decline of both empires at the hands of the Spanish Empire. The Assassins might assist the native Aztecs and Mayans, while the Templars could be leading the Spanish forces, with Hernán Cortés potentially revealed as a Templar.

In the game Assassin’s Creed 2, Qulan Gal made his debut for the first time, being one of the seven legendary Assassins who were commemorated by statues hidden beneath the Villa Auditore.
