How to Catch Animals in Hytale

As a Hytale player, I’m really excited about all the animals and the resources they give you – things like hides, meat, and even feathers and eggs! I’m planning on building a huge farm with all sorts of creatures, but first I need to figure out how to actually get them to follow me around. It’s a key step before I can start my farm!

In Hytale, you can befriend and capture animals, but first you’ll need to craft the right tools. This guide will show you how to find animals and successfully tame them without frightening them away.

Hytale is still being developed and is currently in early access, so not all features are available right now. The animal taming feature, in particular, might not be finished yet. We’ll be sure to update this guide as soon as it’s fully implemented.

How to Lure Animals and Use Feed Bags in Hytale

As a big fan of getting close to animals in the game, I’ve learned that they usually bolt when you get near – unless they’re the ones doing the chasing! But there’s a way to stop them from running, and it’s called a Feed Bag. You can make one yourself at a Farmer’s Workbench, and here’s what you’ll need…

  • 10 Wheat
  • 5 of any Vegetable
  • 5 of any Fruit
  • 10 Essence of Life

You can discover these items by exploring the world. While they’re generally easy to find, if you’re struggling to get Essences of Life, try harvesting crops like Wheat and other vegetables. You can grow Wheat at your base by preparing some farmland and planting the seeds.

With a Feed Bag equipped, smaller animals are less likely to flee when you get close. Currently, this mostly affects young or small creatures such as chicks, piglets, and rabbits.

As a player, I’ve noticed that when I have a Feed Bag equipped, little hearts pop up over an animal’s head, which is cute! But honestly, that seems to be all it does right now. It makes me think the developers might still be working on how the Feed Bag is supposed to work, and we’ll probably see more features added later on. It feels like the ‘luring’ part isn’t quite finished yet.

Certain animals are easily attracted using food. For instance, rabbits and horses love carrots and will often follow someone carrying them.

How to Capture Animals in Hytale

You can trap small animals – like rabbits, chicks, and piglets – using a Capture Box. This is useful for having a local source of leather and food. To get the recipe for the Capture Box, you first need to upgrade any Farmer’s Workbench to level 2 by using these materials:

  • 50 Essence of Life
  • 5 Wheat
  • 5 Lettuce
  • 5 Softwood Trunks

You can make Wheat and Lettuce Seeds at a Farmer’s Workbench using Essences of Life. Plant these seeds at your base and harvest them when they’re grown to get the upgrade you need. To get Softwood Trunks, chop down Beech trees – you’ll find these in meadow areas.

Using the Capture Box is easy! Just hold it, point it at the animal you want to catch, and click the left mouse button. The animal will be safely trapped inside. To release it, just click the left mouse button again.
