Every Pirate Crew With Fish-Men In One Piece

Every Pirate Crew With Fish-Men In One Piece

Key Takeaways

  • Fish-men are prevalent in One Piece, with various crews featuring them.
  • The Sun Pirates and Arlong Pirates are notable fish-men crews with complex backstories and relationships with other crews.
  • Fish-men serve different roles in other pirate crews, like the Whitebeard Pirates, Foxy Pirates, and Beasts Pirates, showcasing diversity.

As a seasoned pirate enthusiast with an affinity for the underwater realm, I must say that Sunbell, the stout fish-man companion of the legendary Pirate King Gol D. Roger, certainly stands out among his crewmates. His mysterious origins and formidable prowess in battle make him a captivating character to follow.

In the world of One Piece, Fish-Men are quite common. Compared to humans, they possess extraordinary physical power and can even swim – traits that make them ideal for life as a pirate. They’ve been spotted in various parts of this vast universe.

In the world of One Piece, it’s not just pirate crews composed solely of fish-men that exist; some fish-men have integrated into human society and even choose to join primarily human crews. This diversity makes following every crew an intricate task within such a sprawling narrative.

As a passionate admirer of the high seas’ lore, I’ll compile a record detailing any pirate crews known to have fish-men as part of their team, at least for a brief period. This list will only include canonical instances where they appeared in established stories and narratives.

14 Sun Pirates

Captains: Fisher Tiger, Jimbei

Every Pirate Crew With Fish-Men In One Piece
  • Debut: Chapter 620 (Manga), Episode 540 (Anime)
  • Fish-Men in the crew: Wadatsumi and other unnamed members.
  • Fish-Men formerly in the crew: Fisher Tiger, Jimbei, Arlong, Hatchan, Kuroobi, Chew, Macro, Gyaro, Tansui, Pisaro, and Kaneshiro.

The Sun Pirates, a prominent group of fish-men pirates, are often considered pioneers in their field. Numerous other fish-men pirate crews have had ties to them, and they generally strive to act for the betterment of their kind. Established by Fisher Tiger, a sea bream fish-man and former slave, most of his crewmates were also former slaves. Each member was marked with a symbol as a sign of unity, intended to make the ex-slaves indistinguishable from those who had never been enslaved by the World Nobles.

In contrast to many other fish-human crews, what sets this crew apart is their inclusion of merfolk. Notably, the ship’s doctor, Aladine, and his wife, Charlotte Praline – who happens to be half-mermaid – are among them. It’s worth noting that, despite being different species, fish-men and merfolk share remarkably similar genetics.

Despite Fisher Tiger’s desire to avoid passing on his prejudice, the harsh treatment he endured at the hands of humans had made him rather biased towards them. His demise was triggered by betrayal when he sent a human servant to her kin (an action prompted by the family trying to negotiate a deal to spare their child). Nevertheless, Tiger resolutely declined a blood transfusion from a human, which could have saved his life, due to his deep-seated animosity towards their species.

After the death of the tiger (leader), Jimbei assumed control over the crew. To forgive his fellow crew members, Jimbei ascended to the rank of Warlord and succeeded in liberating Arlong from captivity. However, Arlong showed ingratitude towards Jimbei and departed from the crew, as he held only Tiger in high esteem and not their shared ideals. Consequently, Arlong established the Arlong Pirates, which was one of the two crews that broke away following Jimbei’s ascension to a Warlord. The other splinter group was the Macro Pirates.

To preserve some sort of defense mechanism, the Sun Pirates have been allied with diverse forces. Earlier, they were associated with the government through Jimbei, but during this period, Whitebeard safeguarded Fish-Man Island. Following his demise and Jimbei’s withdrawal from the warlord ranks, they became a subservient crew under Big Mom, who previously served as the guardian of Fish-Men Island for a fee. At present, it’s the Straw Hats who are tasked with protecting the island. Interestingly, instead of continuing as captain of the Sun Pirates, Jimbei chose to join the Straw Hat crew instead.

13 Arlong Pirates

Captain: Arlong

Every Pirate Crew With Fish-Men In One Piece
  • Debut: Chapter 69 (Manga), Episode 31 (Anime)
  • Fish-Men in the crew: Arlong, Kyoobi, Chew, Pisaro, Kaneshiro, Take, Shikoyaki, and other unnamed members.
  • Fish-Men formerly in the crew: Hatchan.

Living at Arlong Park in East Blue, this pirate gang, predominantly made up of fish-people, once included Nami as an unwilling officer before she left. Notable former members of the Sun Pirates, who departed upon Jimei’s rise to Warlord, were among their most prominent crew members. Headed by Arlong, a sawshark fish-man, they have a deep-seated racism against humans and aren’t hesitant about terrorizing nearby villages or taking lives. Not every member of the crew holds these ideals as strongly as others; Hatchan takes pride in his friendship with Silvers Rayleigh.

Although Arlong harbored a strong bias against humans, he had no qualms about associating with crooked navy officials to preserve his authority. His plan was to leverage Nami’s cartography skills to construct a map for world domination, but this scheme never materialized. Eventually, their group disintegrated following their encounter with the Straw Hats. The majority of its leading members, except for Hatchan, were taken into custody.

12 Macro Pirates

Captain: Macro

Every Pirate Crew With Fish-Men In One Piece
  • Debut: Chapter 197 (Manga; Cover Story), Episode 386 (Anime)
  • Fish-Men in the crew: Macro, Gyaro, and Tansui.

Among the smallest pirate crews featured in the “One Piece” series, the Macro Pirates stand out as rather ordinary compared to other fish-man crews. Comprised of just three members, this crew deviates from the values held by their parent crew, showing no qualms about subjecting fellow fish-men and merfolk to slavery or even collaborating with humans for such purposes.

These characters have a reputation for attempting to capture Camie, the mermaid, over thirty times and even went after their old friend, Hatchan. However, it’s worth noting that they are often less successful compared to many of their former companions. In fact, Hatchan was able to easily overcome them in combat.

11 New Fish-Man Pirates

Captain: Hody Jones

Every Pirate Crew With Fish-Men In One Piece
  • Debut: Chapter 607 (Manga), Episode 527 (Anime)
  • Fish-Men in the crew: Hody Jones, Dosun, Zeo, Ikaros Much, Hyouzou, Hammond, Kasagoba, Harisenbon, and other unnamed Fish-Men.

This team consisted of several half-human, half-fish beings who adhered to Arlong’s anti-human ideology. However, the support for these beliefs on their home island, Fish-Man Island, was quite limited. The leader of the New Fish-Man Pirates, Hody Jones, was a giant white shark hybrid who aimed to seize control of the island effectively. Unlike his predecessor, Hody formed strategic alliances that Arlong could not, broadening his influence. Despite this, he was relatively unfamiliar with humans and thought that violence would lead him to fish-man dominance.

In a failed attempt to stir up resentment among sea creatures against her beliefs, he brutally murdered Otohime, revealing his readiness to take the lives of his own kind, fueled by his intense hatred towards humans. However, ironically, this act led the island to welcome human assistance more eagerly in their quest for liberation. In the end, the group was disbanded following their defeat, as the overuse of energy boosters caused the senior members to age prematurely and lose their peak abilities.

10 Flying Pirates

Captain: Vander Decken IX

Every Pirate Crew With Fish-Men In One Piece
  • Debut: Chapter 606 (Manga), Episode 525 (Anime)
  • Fish-Men in the crew: Vander Decken IX and other unnamed fish-men.
  • Fish-Men formerly in the crew: Wadatsumi.

This team, known as the New Fish-Man Pirates, was a formidable alliance with a reputation for being invincible. By their very nature, they were marine plunderers, and given their fish-man characteristics, they excelled in sea robberies. Their leader, Vander Decken IX, a Japanese bullhead shark fish-man, had ingested a Devil Fruit which granted him exceptional marksmanship skills, but at the expense of his ability to breathe underwater. Decken has an intense desire to marry Shirahoshi, the mermaid queen.

Initially, their team included two colossal characters: Ankoro, a type of anglerfish, and Wadatsumi, a tiger blowfish humanoid, so immense that they could have brought about catastrophic damage wherever they went. However, despite their size, the crew ultimately suffered defeat. Wadatsumi was subdued by Sanji, while Decken was betrayed by Hody and lost consciousness after his plans for vengeance fell through. Eventually, Wadatsumi joined the Sun Pirates following his banishment due to his inability to be imprisoned because of his enormous size. The remaining members of the crew were likely apprehended.

9 Foxy Pirates (Formerly)

Captain: Foxy

Every Pirate Crew With Fish-Men In One Piece
  • Debut: Chapter 304 (Manga), Episode 207 (Anime)
  • Fish-Men formerly in the crew: Capote, Big Pan (Wotan), and possibly others.

Previously, Foxy assembled an enormous group, mainly composed of pirates he defeated at Davy Back Battles – events where the vanquished often lose their shipmates. Notably, Foxy’s crew is the first predominantly human one to include fish-men. Capote, a billfish fish-man, is among them and demonstrates remarkable athletic skills, particularly when in water.

In the world of the Foxy Pirates, there’s Big Pan, an unusual character who embodies Wotan, a half-fishman and half-giant entity. So far, he is the only canonical Wotan depicted in the series. His human-like traits stand out among his fish-man comrades due to his giant ancestry. However, as the Final Saga unfolds, it becomes clear that neither Capote nor Big Pan are part of the crew any longer. It’s speculated that the other fish-men might have been lost in a Davy Back Fight, leaving only human members among the remaining Foxy Pirates.

8 Whitebeard Pirates

Captain: Whitebeard

Every Pirate Crew With Fish-Men In One Piece
  • Debut: Chapter 154 (Manga), Episode 91 (Anime)
  • Fish-Men in the crew: Namur, Wallace, and possibly others.

Whitebeard was tasked with safeguarding Fish-Man Island, and his flag symbolized it as his domain to guard. Remarkably, his crew included at least two fish-men. Namur, a fish-man resembling a shark, held the position of commander for the 8th division. It appeared that Namur took his duties very seriously, even bearing an “8” mark on his chin as a symbol of his role.

It’s uncertain just how strong he is, but given his position among one of the strongest crews, it’s probable that his power falls within a significant range for fish-men or pirates. Alongside many other crew members, his current location remains unknown, although it’s likely he participated in the Payback War – a conflict where the Whitebeard Pirates were defeated by the Blackbeard Pirates. After this defeat, rumors suggest that the members of both crews went into hiding.

7 Spade Pirates (Absorbed Into The Whitebeard Pirates)

Captain: Ace

Every Pirate Crew With Fish-Men In One Piece
  • Debut: Chapter 552 (Manga), Episode 461 (Anime)
  • Fish-Men in the crew: Wallace (later joined the Whitebeard Pirates).

The pirate group known as The Spade Pirates was assembled by Portgas D. Ace and boasted a varied team composition, with a long-armed individual, a mermaid, and a fish-man among its members. Notably, the fish-man in this crew was Wallace, who resembled a weedy stingfish. Given Ace’s open-minded personality, he incorporated Wallace into his pirate band. Since The Spade Pirates were not particularly prominent, Wallace is seldom noticed beyond brief cameos in the background.

Following Whitebeard’s victory over and capture of Ace, the team was assimilated into the mighty Whitebeard Pirates. Initially reluctant, Ace eventually embraced the crew and rose to the position of its second division commander. After the tragic demise of both Ace and their captain, it is assumed that the ex-Spade Pirates have gone underground to avoid detection.

6 Takotopus Pirates

Captain: Karma

Every Pirate Crew With Fish-Men In One Piece
  • Debut: Chapter 553 (Manga), Episode 467 (Anime)
  • Fish-Men in the crew: Karma and possibly others.

The team was headed by Karma, a unique individual with octopus and fish traits. Initially, they had been entangled in illegal human trafficking deals, attempting to trade Kozuki Toki and later Oden for financial gain. Unfortunately for them, their scheme didn’t succeed. They were deterred by the strong-willed personalities of Oden and Whitebeard.

At some point later, the team joined the ranks of Whitebeard’s numerous subordinate groups. Following their participation in the Summit War, Karma and his associates have not been shown much afterwards in terms of chronological events.

5 Donquixote Pirates

Captain: Donquixote Doflamingo

Every Pirate Crew With Fish-Men In One Piece
  • Debut: Chapter 223 (Manga), Episode 151 (Anime)
  • Fish-Men in the crew: Dellinger (Human Hybrid)

Distinguished among them are the World Nobles, known for their vast assortment of slaves and inclination towards powerful or unusual species, including fish-men. This prejudice extends beyond them, as humans generally look down on fish-men. Yet, there have been documented cases where humans have interbred with fish-men. A remarkable example is Charlotte Linlin, a prolific hybrid creator, who gave birth to a half-fish-man, half-human named De-Chat. However, it appears that De-Chat has yet to participate in the activities of the Big Mom Pirates, possibly because he’s still quite young.

A fish-man hybrid who is an actual pirate is Dellinger. Dellinger was an orphan who was found by the Donquixote Pirates and raised by Giolla. Despite his origins, Donquixote Doflamingo seems to have no problem accepting Dellinger as one of his family. Dellinger is shown to have incredible physical strength, taking down a number of Corrida Colosseum participants until he was ultimately undone by Hakuba, Cavendish’s evil alter ego. He, along with his crewmates, have since been arrested by the marines and likely imprisoned.

4 Beasts Pirates

Captain: Kaido

Every Pirate Crew With Fish-Men In One Piece
  • Debut: Chapter 595 (Manga), Episode 513 (Anime)
  • Fish-Men in the crew: Jack, Sasaki, and possibly others.

Originally, The Beast Pirates were known as one of the four most dangerous groups to challenge the World Government. They established themselves in Wano, bolstering the authority of Shogun Kurozumi Orochi. Despite not having any significant ties with the larger fish-man population, two high-ranking members of their crew are actually fish-men.

Jack ‘the Drought’ is a giant grouper fish-man and one of Kaido’s All-Stars, being considered his third most powerful subordinate. He is powerful enough to hold off a number of minks, a race of natural warriors, and is shown to be a devastating force. ‘Overflowing’ Sasaki is a bluespine unicornfish fish-man who is one of the Tobiroppo, six of the strongest officers of the Beasts Pirates (except the All-Stars). Likely due to Kaido’s dream of an all-Zoan pirate crew, the two have eaten ancient Zoan Devil Fruits, limiting their efficiency underwater but giving them powerful abilities on land.

It seems uncertain as to why Kaido specifically chooses to recruit Fish-Men, given that his Devil Fruit power diminishes their most advantageous environment. However, it might be due to the fact that their immense strength sets them apart from most other beings, irrespective of their race.

3 Roger Pirates

Captain: Gol D. Roger

Every Pirate Crew With Fish-Men In One Piece
  • Debut: Chapter 19 (Manga), Episode 8 (Anime)
  • Fish-Men in the crew: Sunbell.

The Pirate Crew led by Roger was famously headed by Gol D. Roger, the sole pirate to bear the title ‘King of Pirates.’ Most of Roger’s crew were humans, but one of them was a companion from the underwater world – a fish-man named Sunbell, who possessed webbed hands and a fin on his head. The specific type of fish he resembled remains unspecified.

The anime depicts him as a formidable pirate who engaged in fierce battles with strong swordsmen like ‘Flower Sword’ Vista, even facing off against some of Whitebeard’s division commanders. At present, it remains a mystery where he ended up following Roger’s dissolution of the crew.

2 Rocks Pirates

Captain: Rocks D. Xebec

Every Pirate Crew With Fish-Men In One Piece
  • Debut: Chapter 957 (Manga), Episode 958 (Anime)
  • Fish-Men in the Crew: One unnamed member shown at God Valley and possibly others.

This formidable band of pirates, many of whom would later gain fame, was skillfully gathered by Rocks D. Xebec. His ambition was nothing short of ruling the entire world. Interestingly, Whitebeard found his tenure with this crew less than enjoyable, as constant squabbles were a regular occurrence among the numerous pirates who were not accustomed to following commands.

In God Valley, there was a member of the crew who seemed to be a fish-man with a prominent lip. This enigmatic character was one of the combatants within the group. The precise extent of his physical power hasn’t been determined yet, but given the strength of the rest of the crew, it can be inferred that he is quite formidable. Despite some of his fellow crew members achieving notable status later on, details about this particular character remain largely undisclosed at present.

1 Straw Hat Pirates

Captain: Monkey D. Luffy

Every Pirate Crew With Fish-Men In One Piece
  • Debut: Chapter 5 (Manga), Episode 3 (Anime)
  • Fish-Men in the crew: Jimbei.

As a fish-man once captained by a noble whale-shark, I, Jimbei, have always harbored a passion for the liberation of our kind. To achieve this goal, I frequently forged bonds with humans and even cultivated friendships among them. Among these friends was Ace, whose ties to the Whitebeard Pirates made him an invaluable ally.

Following the Summit War, Jimbei crossed paths with Luffy on Fish-Man Island, where Luffy invited him to join his pirate crew. Despite wanting to accept, Jimbei’s responsibilities steered him towards the Sun Pirates for a while. However, after it appeared that he had successfully evacuated their crew from Whole Cake Island, he formally joined the Straw Hat Pirates and has been serving as their helmsman since then. Known for his unwavering faith in Luffy, Jimbei continues to express his conviction that Luffy will one day be crowned the King of Pirates.
