Scalpers Are Already Ruining The PS5 Pro Launch

As a seasoned gamer who has been through countless console launches and market madness, I must say the antics of scalpers during the PS5 Pro pre-orders have left me more disheartened than ever before. It’s like a cruel reminder that there will always be those who prioritize greed over community.

On Thursday, pre-orders for both the PlayStation 5 Pro and the 30th Anniversary Edition PS5 Pro became available, but unfortunately, scalpers have managed to snatch up a significant amount of these units, leaving less for the general public.

As a passionate gaming enthusiast, I’ve been keeping a close eye on the market, and within just a short span of time, we’re seeing the 30th Anniversary Edition of the PS5 Pro pop up on eBay for prices significantly higher than their retail value. The price hike varies quite dramatically, with some listings asking for as little as a 173% markup, while others are seeking an astonishing 952% more than the original price, depending on the listing.

It’s important to mention that the pre-orders for the United States haven’t started yet, and they’re tied to the ones in the UK which began today. Given this timeline, there’s a strong possibility that the situation could deteriorate once the U.S. market starts taking orders.

The official launch date for the PS5 Pro is set for November 7, 2024. If you manage to purchase the standard version of the PS5 Pro from a regular store, it will retail at approximately $699/£699.99/€799.99 (pre-tax). For those interested in the limited edition 30th Anniversary PS5 Pro, expect to pay more than $900, with a UK price tag of £959.00.
