Hytale features massive, automatically-created worlds that are too big to explore easily on foot. Fortunately, the game offers various mounts to help players get around, and horses are the simplest and most common option.
If you don’t want to walk everywhere in the world of Orbis, riding a horse is a good option. Horses are quicker and have more energy than players, letting you travel easily between locations. Here’s how to get a horse and start riding in Hytale.
Currently, Hytale is still in early access, meaning it’s not fully finished. Many features players are expecting haven’t been added yet. You can ride horses, but you can’t fully tame them—that’s something the developers are likely to add in a future update as they continue to improve the game.
Where to Find Horses in Hytale
As a big fan of exploring, I’ve noticed horses usually hang out in those lovely meadow biomes – you know, the ones with all the gentle hills and grassy fields. You’ll see them grazing while you’re gathering stuff, but getting a ride isn’t always easy! They’re pretty skittish and will run away the second they spot you, so you really need to be sneaky and approach them from behind.
By default, you can press the ‘F’ key when you’re close to a horse to ride it. You don’t need a saddle or to feed the horse beforehand – just walk up and press ‘F’ to start riding. However, riding a horse this way doesn’t make it like you, and it will probably run off after you dismount.
Taming Horses in Hytale
To approach horses in Hytale without frightening them, simply carry a carrot. Horses will willingly come to you if you have a carrot in your hand. But if you try to approach them while holding anything else, they’ll run away.
I’ve found that you can just stumble across carrots while exploring, which is awesome! But if you want a reliable source, you can grow your own. You’ll need to head to a Farmer’s Workbench and craft some carrot seeds – it takes 3 Essences of Life to make a batch.
Okay, so as of right now, the only way I’ve found to stop a horse from bolting is by holding a carrot in front of it! It’s a bit annoying though, because the second I put the carrot away, they just take off running. Even if I’m already riding them, they’ll still try to escape! But, here’s a neat trick: if I manage to get a horse inside my base, they actually stay put even without the carrot. That’s a huge relief!
