Starfield: How Shattered Space's Great Serpent Compares to The Elder Scrolls' Sithis

As a long-time fan of both Bethesda games and space epics, I’m absolutely thrilled about the upcoming expansion for Starfield, titled Shattered Space. The fact that it delves deeper into one of the least explored Houses, House Va’ruun, has me hooked.

The initial expansion for Starfield, titled Shattered Space, is slated for release on September 30th. In this expansion, Starfield: Shattered Space, the focus shifts to House Va’ruun, a House that has remained relatively unexplored within the universe of Starfield. This expansion will be centered around a single planet, yet players will enjoy the freedom to visit and depart as they wish. For the first time, players can explore House Va’ruun’s homeworld, Va’ruun’kai, and unveil the enigmas that shroud this secretive group.

In this article, you may find hints about plot twists for the game Starfield: Shattered Space. The revelation of House Va’ruun’s secret worship of the Great Serpent could lead to a significant conflict. The current Speaker of House Va’ruun, Anasko Va’ruun, has been exposed as a casualty of a space-time rift, which might intensify religious uncertainties within the storyline. Interestingly, as we learn more about the Great Serpent, similarities to Sithis from The Elder Scrolls are emerging, as both deities seem to communicate through a single representative, possibly a statue, and have at times been portrayed as enormous serpents in their respective lore.

The Great Serpent and House Va’Ruun’s Worship in Starfield: Shattered Space

Among the distinctive traits of House Va’ruun lies their devotion to the Grand Serpent, an aspect deeply ingrained in their society that elevates their leader to a unique position as the only one who communicates with the Grand Serpent, earning them the title of the Speaker. This resembles another Bethesda game franchise, The Elder Scrolls, where the Dark Brotherhood reveres Sithis. Despite the Grand Serpent and Sithis seeming dissimilar at first sight, their histories, portrayals, and potential means of interaction with their followers share striking parallels.

In the immersive world of Starfield: Shattered Space, I, as a devoted follower, reverence the mighty Serpent deity, held sacred by House Va’ruun. Their esteemed leader, Anasko Va’ruun, serves as the chosen vessel for our divine entity to convey its messages. Unfortunately, due to an immense rift in the fabric of space and time, Anasko has mysteriously vanished, leaving House Va’ruun in turmoil.

Sithis and The Dark Brotherhood in The Elder Scrolls

In the world of The Elder Scrolls, Sithis, an ancient deity, is revered by the enigmatic guild known as the Dark Brotherhood – a group of skilled assassins. Though seldom manifesting himself to his followers, when Sithis does reveal himself to mortals, he is often symbolized as a serpent, much like in The Elder Scrolls: Online and in various cultures within Tamriel, where he is also depicted as such.

In the world of Elder Scrolls 4: Oblivion, I found an intriguing parallel to the enigmatic Great Serpent in the Dark Brotherhood’s communication method. The mysterious Night Mother, their leader, uses a statue in Bravil to convey messages, much like the Speaker in Starfield: Shattered Space. If the Great Serpent communicates with its followers through the Speaker, this could very well establish a strong link between the Great Serpent and Sithis. The Night Mother serves as the messenger for Sithis, although it’s important to note that she merely speaks on his behalf.
