Capcom recently announced during the Resident Evil Showcase that the new game, Resident Evil Requiem, will offer limited saves using the classic ink ribbon system – but this feature will be optional. The game is set to release on February 27th and will introduce a new character, Grace Ashcroft, alongside the return of Leon S. Kennedy.
The recent Resident Evil Showcase mostly confirmed what fans already knew about Resident Evil Requiem, but it did offer a few new details. One highlight was the reveal of zombies that still exhibit behaviors from their previous lives – like a zombie janitor continuing to clean and a zombie chef still chopping food, even in death. There was also a zombie hotel guest aimlessly pressing elevator buttons. Players can observe these zombies’ patterns to either avoid them or gain an advantage in combat.
Everything Revealed at the Resident Evil Showcase
As we already know, Resident Evil Requiem will let players control both Grace and Leon. Gameplay with Grace will focus on classic survival horror, emphasizing limited resources and tough choices about fighting or running away. Leon’s sections will be more action-packed, similar to Resident Evil 4. The showcase highlighted Leon’s combat style, showing him defeating zombies with weapons like a chainsaw and even his boot and hatchet. While Grace will have limited ammunition, she’s not helpless. She has a powerful revolver called Requiem and can collect zombie blood to craft weapons, including a syringe that causes zombies to explode.
Image via Capcom Grace’s parts in Resident Evil Requiem seem like they’ll be harder than playing as Leon, but how difficult they are really depends on how you play. The game will have three difficulty levels: Story mode focuses on the narrative and puzzles, Modern mode is the standard difficulty similar to other Resident Evil games, and Classic mode makes Grace’s sections significantly more challenging. On Classic mode, Grace will have limited save points, relying on finding ink ribbons throughout the game. This is a nod to the older Resident Evil titles and will offer a tougher experience for players who want it.
What Else Was Announced at the Resident Evil Showcase
The Resident Evil Showcase mostly focused on gameplay, but also revealed some interesting partnerships. Players will see Leon driving a Porsche in the game, and both Leon and Grace will have their own limited-edition Hamilton watches. Only 2,000 of each watch will be made and sold to the public.
To mark Resident Evil‘s 30th anniversary, concerts will be held in Japan, Europe, and North America. New collectible figures will be released this fall, and amiibo are also planned. The Requiem Switch 2 Pro Controller, previously announced, will be available, and the game will also launch on GeForce Now in addition to the platforms already confirmed.
The presentation ended by hinting at something called “Elpis,” which seems connected to both Leon and the circumstances surrounding the death of Grace’s mother, Alyssa Ashcroft. Fans of Resident Evil Requiem will need to wait until the game comes out on February 27th to learn the full story.
