How to Get Darkwood in Hytale

Hytale features a variety of trees, each producing a different type of wood. Many crafting recipes call for specific woods, and Darkwood is one of them. Despite its name, Darkwood isn’t scary—it’s simply wood that’s darker in color. While it might not be available at the very beginning of the game, it becomes easy to find as you progress.

How to Get Darkwood in Hytale

Okay, so if you’re looking for Darkwood, the best place to start is usually up north on the map, in those snowy tundra areas. There are tons of Cedar trees there, and when you chop them down, they give you Cedar Trunks, which the game counts as Darkwood. It’s a pretty reliable way to get it, honestly!

Interestingly, Fir and Redwood trees, which look a lot like Cedar and grow in the same cold areas of Hytale, aren’t considered part of the Darkwood forest.

When you reach the tundra, you can cut down all the trees, but if you’re aiming specifically for Darkwood, it’s important to be selective. Cedar trees have bluish-green leaves that curl up, while Fir and Redwood trees have greener leaves that curl down. The image shows Redwood trees on the left and Cedar trees on the right.

You can chop down Cedar trees with any axe. For the most materials, start by hitting the bottom block of the tree. When exploring the tundra, watch out for Cobalt and Outlanders – they drop Shadoweave Scraps in Hytale. To make the most of your time in the tundra, be prepared for combat or a quick trip to the mountains for mining.

Okay, so I was having a hard time locating Cedar trees, but I figured it out! You can usually find them in the drier areas near the tundra – look for those big, brown patches on the map. That’s where I started looking and finally had some luck!

What is Darkwood For?

Darkwood is especially useful in Hytale for improving your Farmer’s Workbench. Upgrading it requires 40 Darkwood Trunks, along with several other materials you’ll need to gather.

You can turn Darkwood into building materials using the Builder’s Workbench. These blocks have a distinctive dark color and a warm, cozy feel, making them ideal for building everything from small homes to larger structures like taverns. If you don’t want to build a permanent base in a snowy area, consider creating a small camp with a Teleporter instead – that way, you’ll always have easy access to more resources.
