Last year saw the early access release of Grounded 2, joining other games from Obsidian Entertainment like Avowed and The Outer Worlds 2, making for a very productive 2025. Obsidian is continuing that momentum into 2026. Because Grounded 2 is still in development, the game is being consistently updated with new content. The December update added a winter theme, and the upcoming January update promises to be the biggest one so far.
The upcoming update, officially named Toxic Tangle, began testing on January 15th. It includes a significant amount of new content for Grounded 2, and getting a sneak peek will help players understand the changes before they’re released. From new enemies to a completely new area to explore, this update promises to greatly expand the game.
Grounded 2’s Toxic Tangle Update Adds a Treasure Trove of New Features
The most significant update coming to Grounded 2 is the new Garden area. This expansive landscape offers players a much larger world to explore and try to survive in. While Grounded 2 has received several updates during its early access phase, the Garden introduces exciting new features—such as the Greenhouse—designed to greatly enhance the overall gameplay experience.
Grounded 2‘s Toxic Tangle update officially goes live on January 27th.
Every New Feature Confirmed for Grounded 2
- Garden location

- Snake Colossus

- 10 new resources

- 8 new buildings
The Garden is Home to New Creatures, But Not All of Them Are Friendly
The Garden in Grounded 2 looks like a lot of fun to explore, but players need to be careful! The new update, Toxic Tangle, introduces Wasps and Wasp Drones, which might remind veterans of the original Grounded and their challenging first encounters. While Grounded isn’t the most difficult survival game out there, it still offers a good challenge, and it will be interesting to see how Obsidian balances these new enemies. The update also includes other new creatures, such as:
- Pincher and Whipper Earwigs
- Wooly Aphids
- Rust and Potato Beetles
- Crickets
If you’re excited to battle the biggest enemy in Grounded 2 so far, you won’t have to look for long. The massive Snake Colossus is located on the outer wall of the Garden, specifically in the Croquet Court area.
Grounded 2 Expands its Arsenal With Fresh Weapons and Armor Sets
To survive the insects and creatures in Grounded 2, you’ll need good weapons, and the new Toxic Tangle update delivers! Players can now craft unique options like the Cricket Lute Bow, Earwig Sword, Boom Sticks, and Crimson Reapers, giving them more ways to prepare for any encounter.
Since its release, Grounded 2 has featured a variety of armor, and the new Toxic Tangle update adds even more choices, including Cricket Caps, Serpent Hoods, and Potato Beetle Chestplates. The Garden area in Grounded 2 is a lot of fun, but it also makes the game more challenging. Hopefully, the addition of new weapons and armor, alongside the increasing number of bugs, will keep the game balanced and enjoyable.
Testing with acidic materials has resulted in the creation of Tang, a substance that has spread across the Garden, forming corrosive spills and lakes that players must clean up as they explore.
Grounded 2’s Toxic Tangle Update Bodes Well for the Rest of the Game’s 2026 Plans
The start to 2026 for Obsidian’s Grounded 2 is incredibly promising, raising the bar for future updates – especially considering how successful Obsidian’s recent games have been. Grounded 2‘s unique premise allows for truly creative gameplay, and the Toxic Tangle update perfectly showcases the game’s potential for fun and innovation. While Toxic Tangle moves the game closer to being finished, there’s still plenty more content planned and room for expansion.
While details are still coming, Obsidian has shared a roadmap for what’s next after the Toxic Tangle update in Grounded 2. The next major update is planned for release this summer and will focus on water-based gameplay. Players can expect to see new creatures that live in the water, as well as new bases, vehicles (buggies), and equipment designed for underwater exploration. Given the game’s quirky story, this update promises some unique and interesting additions.
Image via Obsidian Entertainment While there’s still room for improvement, Grounded 2 has had a strong start since launching in summer 2025. In many ways, it’s already surpassing the original Grounded. Although it doesn’t have quite as much content as the first game yet, the promise of future updates and features is very promising. The recent Toxic Tangle update is a major step forward, and fans are hoping for even more big changes in 2026. Obsidian Entertainment has clearly outlined plans to continually expand the game throughout 2026, and it will be interesting to see how much Grounded 2 evolves by its one-year anniversary.
