The Sims 4 is getting a new expansion pack focused on royalty and creating a lasting family legacy, titled ‘Royalty and Legacy’. Many players think this might be the final major update for the game, as the developers may soon begin working on The Sims 5, following recent speculation and leaks.
The new trailer showed off what’s coming in The Sims 4: Royalty and Legacy expansion pack. We’ve put together a summary to help fans understand all the exciting new features.
Dynasties
The upcoming expansion focuses on royalty, and we’re organizing royal families by dynasties. Although they might not be immediately obvious, dynasties are central to the themes of Royalty and Legacy, and will have a big impact on gameplay. Expect to see this influence things like a family’s prestige and how children are raised, among other features.
It’s inevitable that conflict arises within royal families when deciding who will inherit the throne. Factors like family ties, age, and the number of siblings often play a role, and this can unfortunately lead to tragedy and unpredictable consequences.
Values and Unity
Each dynasty in the game will be defined by its unique values and traditions, as shown in the trailer.
Each member of the family will probably be remembered for whether they upheld or disregarded the family’s core beliefs. When someone’s actions clash with those beliefs, it can strain their relationships with relatives, leading to discord and instability within the family.
When families aren’t united, arguments are likely to happen, and disagreements about what’s important can cause long-lasting conflicts between powerful families.
Swordfighting Skill
Each new expansion for The Sims 4 introduces a variety of hobbies and skills based around a central theme. In this case, swordfighting is a prominent skill, particularly important for Sims who are nobles, knights, or royalty, as it’s essential for them to learn.
The trailer shows that becoming skilled with a sword significantly boosts your reputation, and this will probably tie into a dedicated swordfighting ability.
Royal Scandals

The trailer reveals a Sim who becomes nobility through marriage, but then has an affair. A housemaid discovers it and, despite pleas for silence, shares the secret throughout the kingdom, causing a major scandal. This ultimately leads to a painful divorce between the leaders of the two royal families.
It’s currently unclear if the new scandal feature will be limited to royal Sims, or if it will be available in other neighborhoods and worlds within The Sims 4. The feature shares some similarities with the snooping mechanic introduced in the For Rent expansion pack—where Sims could blackmail others after discovering secrets. Because of this, it’s possible the scandal feature will only be available to noble families to avoid repeating gameplay elements.
Prestige
Similar to how a Sim’s social connections fluctuate, their prestige level can also go up or down depending on their choices, daily life, and what they enjoy doing.
If a Sim acts badly or is disrespectful, their prestige will decrease, causing other Sims to lose respect for them. Conversely, Sims can gain prestige by developing impressive skills like artistry or swordsmanship, which boosts their reputation.
Frog Prince
One quick scene in the trailer shows a Sim kissing a frog wearing a crown. This is a nod to classic fairy tales, like the story of the princess and the frog, where a kiss breaks a curse and transforms the frog into a prince.
It’s unclear whether the scene shown in the trailer is just for fun, or if it will actually be a feature in The Sims 4 Royalty and Legacy. Previous expansion packs have included challenges where players complete tasks to earn rewards, and this might be similar.
The Frog Prince could be a new gameplay option for players who have the expansion pack, letting them play as a princess trying to help a transformed prince become human again. Or, he might be a unique character players can discover, befriend, and potentially develop a romantic relationship with.
