This game is incredibly expansive, and it’s not just hype. There’s a huge amount to do, including crafting, exploration, and traveling to exciting new worlds, and it’s still under development!
Okay, so I went into Hytale thinking it’d just be like another Minecraft mod, but wow, was I wrong! It doesn’t just add a little to what Minecraft already does, it totally takes things to the next level. The world is amazing – the environments are gorgeous, and they’ve added so many cool new ores to find. It’s a whole new experience!
One of the most interesting parts of Hytale is discovering its ores and where to find them. Let’s explore each ore and how to mine it.
Copper Ore

Copper ore is the most common metal you’ll find, and it’s a good starting point because it’s relatively easy to obtain. You can find it almost everywhere – in the main world, in shallow caves within the Emerald Grove, and even spread throughout other environments.
Copper is helpful when you first start playing, but you’ll likely replace it with iron as soon as you can.
Copper will still be very useful! You’ll need it to improve your workbenches and get new items, so it’s always a good idea to mine it whenever you find some. Having extra on hand is never a bad thing.
Iron Ore
Iron Ore is a bit harder to find than Copper, but it’s generally more powerful and useful in most ways.
Although iron sometimes appears on the surface near old mines or on snowy mountains, you’ll usually find it underground. Look for it in caves within the Emerald Groves, or below the Azure region.
Iron is the strongest material you can use for crafting before improving your workbench and blacksmithing station, so it’s a good idea to make a complete set of armor and weapons before tackling difficult challenges. Like copper, iron is essential for upgrading your crafting stations, so stock up on it whenever you can.
Gold and Silver Ore
These metals are often found near each other, and there are a couple of good places to collect them. The most efficient spot is definitely on top of the snowy mountains in the Boreal Biome.
You’ll recognize the area by the glowing Yetis – they’re hard to miss. The dark rock makes the gold and silver colors really stand out, so you can spot them easily, even from far away.
These ores don’t typically appear in large deposits, but they’re very easy to spot, so you can usually collect a good amount whenever you explore the snowy mountains. You can also find them underground, but they’re much less common and harder to see down there.
Gold and silver are unique ores. Unlike other ores used for crafting regular weapons and armor, you’ll need an Arcanist’s Workbench to transform gold and silver bars into magical equipment.
Thorium Ore
Thorium is a significant improvement over Iron, and it’s the first material that requires Tier 2 Workbenches to craft.
Even though it’s not super rare, Thorium is best found by exploring the Desert Biome. Keep in mind that ores don’t appear everywhere in the desert, though. If you prefer to stay above ground, you can find Thorium veins in the Badlands Biome. This area is a bit darker and home to dangerous Wasps that inflict venom.
If I’m hunting for Thorium, the first thing I do is scan those tall cliffs for any little green sparkles. If I’m not having any luck, I head down to the caves underneath – they usually have a decent amount of the stuff too.
Cobalt Ore
Cobalt is comparable to Thorium, offering very similar benefits. You can craft items using Cobalt at Tier 2 workbenches.
To find Cobalt, your best bet is to explore a Boreal Biome. Although it can sometimes be found on the surface, Cobalt is much more common in the frozen caves beneath the ground.
If you’re having trouble spotting the cobalt on the cave walls, try looking underwater. It hasn’t been officially confirmed, but cobalt appears to generate much more often and in larger amounts when it’s submerged.
Keep an eye out for Essence of Ice. You’ll need a large quantity of it soon to upgrade your workstations.
Adamantite Ore
Adamantite is one of the strongest materials in Hytale, so you might expect it to be really difficult to find. Surprisingly, that’s not true! The biggest challenge isn’t locating the Adamantite itself, but actually reaching the area where it appears.
This bright red ore is located in the Devastated Lands, a large area far from where you first appear in the game. The Devastated Lands is actually made up of many smaller, unique areas both above and below ground.
You can usually find Adamantite on the ground in most Devastated Lands areas – it’s easy to spot because of its red color. It’s also commonly found in towns and villages throughout the biome, especially in high-tier (gold) chests. These chests often contain a good amount of Adamantite, along with armor pieces that are considered rare, comparable to Cobalt or Thorium quality.
Okay, so I was exploring down in the Jungle Biome, after dropping into a volcano, and I discovered you can actually mine Adamantite right from the walls and ceilings down there. Just a heads-up though – the enemies are tough. They really pack a punch and a lot of them will poison you, so be prepared!
Mithril Ore
You can see options for Mithril tools and weapons when looking at your Workbenches, but Mithril itself isn’t actually available in the game yet.
When we add new worlds to the game—found in Shrines and Forgotten Temples—we expect to find Mithril in those challenging areas. But right now, Adamantite remains the strongest metal you can get.
