PlayStation Will Use AI and Machine Learning to Speed up Game Development

As a gamer with decades of experience under my belt, I must say that the latest developments at PlayStation have left me both impressed and intrigued. The integration of AI and machine learning into their game development process is a game-changer, pun intended.

According to the latest Sony Corporation report, it’s been disclosed that the PlayStation platform is planning to employ Artificial Intelligence (AI) and machine learning techniques to expedite the process of video game creation.

On page 16 of the report, Sony mentioned their focus on enhancing technologies that enable creators to effectively and efficiently increase the worth of their intellectual property (IP). These technologies encompass capabilities such as sensing, capturing, real-time 3D processing, artificial intelligence, and machine learning. According to them, these advancements will allow for swift and cost-effective distribution of their IP to a wider audience of fans.

The report uncovers that Sony Interactive Entertainment, or PlayStation, incorporated machine learning during the creation of Marvel’s Spider-Man 2. They utilized voice-recognition software in specific languages to match subtitles with characters’ dialogue automatically. This method noticeably expedited the subtitling process.

Moving forward, Sony plans to utilize top-tier 3D data generated in their Volumetric Capture Studio, which captures people and locations in three dimensions for superior images. They also intend to share this data among their various departments within the company and consider opportunities for external sales.

They added, “We’re delving into real-time 3D processing projects collaboratively with Epic Games, specifically focusing on their Unreal Engine, which was originally designed as a physics engine for creating computer-generated imagery in games. For example, we repurposed 3D graphics elements from a music video produced using virtual production to create a game set within the same universe. As a demonstration of feasibility, we also released a short film made with the Unreal Engine.

In contemporary discussions within the industry, artificial intelligence (AI) and machine learning have been center stage, particularly concerning issues like plagiarism, originality, and potential sources of redundancy. With Sony’s PlayStation showing increased interest in these areas, it’s clear that these debates are far from over.
