As a seasoned gamer and a die-hard fan of My Hero Academia, I can wholeheartedly relate to Midoriya Izuku’s unyielding fascination with Quirks. Born into a world where superpowers are the norm, it’s only natural for someone without one to be captivated by them. However, Deku’s obsession transcends simple admiration; it’s an insatiable curiosity that drives him to analyze and understand every Quirk he encounters.
Izuko Midoriya’s intense fascination with superpowers, or Quirks, has earned him the nickname “Hero Enthusiast” because he idolizes the abilities of professional heroes and his peers. Being quirkless himself, Deku swiftly assesses the pros and cons whenever he learns how a new Quirk functions.
Unaware to Deku, his intense fascination with Quirks will ultimately cause the powers of One For All to radiate more intensely during the Final War. This is because he has an unparalleled understanding of how to utilize them, as seen in “My Hero Academia”. Learn why Deku is so fixated on Quirks within this popular series.
Why is Deku Obsessed with Quirks?
As a Quirkless Boy, He Can’t Help But Admire Those With Quirks
From an early age, Izuku Midoriya has been fascinated and deeply captivated by the powers known as Quirks. This fascination began when he was just four years old and witnessed Bakugo Katsuki’s Quirk manifestation for the first time. It was during kindergarten that Deku had his initial encounter with Quirks, specifically Bakugo’s Explosion Quirk.
As a young lad, Deku found himself captivated by the figure of All Might. He would frequently revisit All Might’s debut video, where he valiantly rescued countless people from a catastrophic event. What truly spellbound others was All Might’s bravery, but his sunny disposition played an essential role in making everyone feel secure.
Sadly, when it came to manifesting his Quirk, Deken’s mother thought he was just taking his time. As a result, she took him to see a doctor, marking the moment when Deken discovered that he had retained both of his pinky toe joints, making him one of the 20% of humanity without a Quirk. From then on, it seems that Deken became fixated on Quirks, given that he didn’t possess one himself.
In Episode One, it’s clear that Deku developed an intense interest in heroes. During the fight between Kamui and Mount Lady, he was found commentating from the sidelines. Furthermore, he moved forward to have a closer view of the battle. Post the battle, Dekyu was spotted with a notebook filled with detailed notes about Mount Lady’s special ability.
As Deku grows into a hero, these analyses on Quirks will prove crucial to his abilities. From an early age, Deku seems to have a natural knack for understanding how different Quirks function or could be optimally utilized by an individual. At the beginning of the series, these Quirk analysis sessions served as self-training for Deku on his path towards heroism. At just 14 years old, he had amassed 13 notebooks titled “Hero Analysis,” which were probably also a way for him to come to terms with being born without a Quirk.
Throughout the series, Deku frequently pulled out a notebook hidden at the waistband of his pants, scribbling down thoughts and observations about his One For All power or his classmates’ unique abilities. It wasn’t just his lack of a Quirk that fueled Deku’s fascination with them; rather, he developed a genuine appreciation for learning about new Quirks as the series progressed.
How does Deku use Quirks to the best of their abilities?
Deku’s Admiration for Quirk Helps Them Shine to the Best of Their Abilities
Previously thought to be solely a source of enormous strength, One For All is actually home to various other abilities as well. This realization came about due to Deku’s unique situation – being born without a Quirk and later inheriting One For All from All Might. It was his lack of a natural Quirk that fueled his intense interest in Quirks.
Due to this development, Deku – who used to be quirkless – found himself with multiple quirks at his disposal, each requiring mastery before facing All For One and Shigaraki Tomura in battle. To begin with, Deki was already behind when it came to quirk training because most other students were familiar with how their own quirks functioned and how to optimize them for maximum effectiveness.
Regrettably, I didn’t receive the Quirk One For All until I turned 15. This late start meant that I had to work hard to develop my own distinct fighting style, a process that involved plenty of trial and error. To help me along, I absorbed various techniques from my mentor, All Might, and applied them in combat, adjusting them to suit my needs since I hadn’t yet mastered One For All completely.
Beyond just his own skills, he studied various fighting techniques used by some of his fellow students such as Bakugo Katsuki and Asui Tsuyu. As Deku gained access to more powers, he formed relationships with classmates like Uraraki Ochaco and Sero Hanta who aided him in training. Armed with new insights given to him by All Might and support from his peers during practice sessions, Deku is now able to effectively utilize his newly-acquired powers. Yet, he often finds it difficult to manage them because of the challenges presented by One For All.
The way he admires each and every Quirk makes One For All shine much brighter.
In the climactic Final War and facing off against Tomura Shigaraki, Deku finds himself at a critical juncture: Kudo, the previous One For All bearer, has given him a plan to transfer the power to Shigaraki. Despite his body still feeling the effects of Gearshift’s recoil, Deku acts swiftly; he utilizes his Blackwhip Quirk to propel himself into motion. To obstruct Shigarki’s view, Deku employs Smokescreen, a trick from his collection of abilities, aware that Shigaraki would be scanning for him.
In Chapter 414, Deku’s strategic mind enabled him to devise a delayed ambush by employing this approach. This tactic was effective primarily because of Deku’s deep-seated understanding of the Quirks he possessed. This knowledge allowed the Quirks within One For All to function optimally for his unique abilities.
