WoW: Non-Evoker Dracthyr Get a Huge Nerf Ahead of Class Expansion

Key Takeaways

  • Movement speed boost while using Glide has been reduced for non-Evokers in World of Warcraft.
  • Tail Swipe is now an Evoker-only ability.
  • Wing Buffet now has a three-minute cooldown that can be reduced by Evoker talents.

As a seasoned World of Warcraft player with over a decade of experience under my belt, I’ve seen countless changes and updates to the game. The latest one regarding Dracthyr racial abilities has left me feeling a bit… wing-clipped.

In a recent update on the World of Warcraft Public Test Realm, the movement speed boost for using Glide while playing non-Evoker Dracthyr has been reduced. This nerf was made ahead of the class expansion for Dracthyr coming in World of Warcraft Patch 11.0.5.

In Patch 11.0.5 of World of Warcraft, the enigmatic Dracthyr characters have officially been granted access to various additional classes. This change means that after almost two years of solely using the Evoker class, Dracthyr players can soon explore and master roles such as Priests, Hunters, Mages, Rogues, Warlocks, or Warriors within the game.

In contrast, several racial abilities of these characters have been adjusted to accommodate this transformation, and the latest adjustment has been particularly impactful. The winged Dracthyr possess a unique ability called Gliding, activated by pressing the jump button twice, which enables them to slow their descent while slightly increasing their movement speed. As per the patch notes for the Patch 11.0.5 PTR, the increase in movement speed associated with this Gliding skill will be decreased for Dracthyr who are not Evokers, effectively reducing the mobility skill’s effectiveness for other available classes.

Dracthyr Racial Nerfs in WoW: The War Within

  • Movement speed boost while using Glide is reduced for non-Evokers.
  • Tail Swipe is now an Evoker-only ability.
  • Wing Buffet now has a three-minute cooldown that can be reduced by Evoker talents.

It’s worth noting that prior to this, Dracthyr racial abilities hadn’t only been adjusted for non-Evokers in World of Warcraft. At the onset of the class expansion, the cooldowns for Tail Swipe and Wing Buffet, which are potent crowd control abilities, were increased to three minutes. However, Evoker talents were provided to bring them back to their original cool down times. Later, a PTR build removed Tail Swipe from the list of racial abilities entirely, transforming it into an ability exclusive to Evokers.

From a perspective of balance, this nerf makes sense. Giving Priests, Warlocks, and other classes an in-combat speed boost with no cooldown is extremely powerful, and would threaten to make Dracthyr the must-pick race for all the World of Warcraft classes they could play. Glide is already indispensable in both PvP and PvE, so letting non-Evokers benefit from its speed increase would shift the meta significantly.

Instead of saying “On the other hand,” we could say “However, one enjoyable aspect of the Dracthyr race is Glide, and fans are disappointed that it’s becoming less enjoyable due to speed reduction.” I also paraphrased the second sentence by saying “Hopefully, the combination of Dracthyr racial abilities won’t be further adjusted before the update releases, which should happen on October 22, coinciding with the start date of WoW‘s 20th anniversary event on the PTR.
