It’s Time to Admit Resident Evil 6 is Great

I vividly recall the release of Resident Evil 6 in 2012. There was a huge wave of excitement initially, but it quickly turned into disappointment for many fans. Over the years, it’s often been called the worst Resident Evil game, but as a longtime player of the series, I’ve never understood that criticism.

Resident Evil 6 is actually a lot of fun, particularly when played with a friend. I’ve been enjoying it recently in co-op with my partner, and it makes me question why it received so much criticism originally.

Resident Evil 6 is actually a solid game with a strong story and fun gameplay. The biggest issue was probably trying to please every type of Resident Evil fan. However, I personally enjoy the variety of different campaigns it offers. People who call it the worst Resident Evil game haven’t experienced some of the really weak spin-off titles.

Okay, looking back on Resident Evil 6 now, knowing how the series evolved, I think it’s time we all just admit it wasn’t as terrible as everyone made it out to be. It wasn’t perfect, but it definitely had some good moments, and honestly, I’m starting to appreciate it more over time.

Resident Evil 6 is Not Terrible

Sure, It’s Action Horror, but Still Fun

The early 2010s were a low point for horror games, and many blame Resident Evil 6 for starting that trend. It’s funny though, because Resident Evil 5 was just as focused on action – if not more so – yet it often gets overlooked. Seriously, you don’t even punch a boulder in Resident Evil 6!

Resident Evil has always focused more on action and scares than creating a deeply unsettling or psychological atmosphere, and it doesn’t really fit the series to force that kind of tone. But if you’re looking for a more classic survival horror experience like older Resident Evil games, there are three campaigns to play, and Leon’s (and later Ada’s) campaign emphasizes that style the most.

In all honesty, Resident Evil 6 is a good game, with a good premise, and good gameplay.

The game also features two extra campaigns – one starring Chris and another starring Sherry – each offering a unique way to play. Whether you prefer fast-paced action (Chris’s campaign) or a mix of classic horror and action (Sherry’s campaign), there’s something for everyone. And, like past games in the series, you can enjoy fun, arcade-style modes too.

A common complaint about this game is its comedic tone, but it seems like some players are unfamiliar with earlier Resident Evil titles. Humor and a bit of over-the-top silliness have always been a core part of the series’ appeal, going all the way back to the beginning.

Is this game the most terrifying Resident Evil title? Not really. But honestly, Resident Evil games have never been the scariest in the horror genre as a whole.

Honestly, I don’t get all the hate for this game. It really bugs me because there are so many other Resident Evil games that were way more disappointing and just plain worse, yet they didn’t catch nearly as much flak. It just doesn’t add up!

The Excessive Hate Makes No Sense

There Are Definitely Worse RE Games

Resident Evil 6 often gets a lot of criticism from both reviewers and fans, but I don’t really understand why. While it’s not perfect, there are definitely worse games in the Resident Evil series – like Umbrella Corps, for example. However, those lesser-known spin-offs are often overlooked while people continue to strongly dislike Resident Evil 6.

If you enjoyed the overall experience but found the story weak, I understand that criticism. The story isn’t great, but honestly, it fits the chaotic events of the game pretty well.

This game puts you in a worldwide disaster similar to the Raccoon City incident, and your primary focus is just staying alive. Trying to understand the cause of everything feels unimportant when you’re desperately trying to reach safety with all your health and abilities intact.

The game features three main storylines (four if you include Ada’s), and each one offers a different perspective on the events. No single storyline tells the whole truth; to get the complete picture, you need to experience them all and piece the information together yourself. This reflects how we often learn – by gathering different accounts and forming our own understanding. It’s similar to the idea that every story has three sides: your perspective, another person’s, and the truth, and that everyone can honestly believe their own version of events, as Robert Evans famously said.

As a player, I love how the game throws you into the memories of four characters across different storylines. It’s not just cool storytelling – it really feels like you’re figuring out this incredibly messy and chaotic situation alongside them. Piecing together those fragmented memories is how you actually understand what’s going on, and it’s a brilliant way to show just how much confusion everyone is dealing with.

This is definitely one of the most confusing events in Resident Evil history, so it’s naturally going to feel disorganized if you’re not familiar with everything that happened. Players need to piece together the full story themselves. You’ll be trying to save the world while also avoiding becoming a zombie, and seeing how well you can make sense of everything along the way.

Hindsight is Always 20/20

It’s Time to Appreciate this Game Entirely

It’s easy to see why fans worried about the future of Resident Evil after Resident Evil 6. Thankfully, the series didn’t fade away – it actually got even better! With the release of Resident Evil 7 and Resident Evil: Village, the focus returned to horror, ensuring the series stays on the right track and avoids repeating the mistakes of RE6.

Looking back, it seems people are still overly critical of this game. Resident Evil didn’t suddenly turn into a pure action series, so it’s unfair to really fault this game for what it is.

Now that the Resident Evil series is still thriving, it’s a great time to revisit Resident Evil 6 and simply have fun with it. If you played it when it first came out and were worried about the future of the series, you can now play it knowing those fears didn’t come true. This lets you actually enjoy Resident Evil 6 instead of avoiding it.

The game is even more enjoyable with a friend, as it’s clearly designed for cooperative play. It makes you wonder how future gamers will view it – will it remain unpopular as the game that nearly ruined the franchise, or will people eventually recognize it as a genuinely fun and well-made experience?

Considering that horror is doing better than ever, I sincerely hope it’s the latter.
