Jagex has unveiled an extensive plan for RuneScape 3, detailing updates and features expected over the next year. As RuneScape celebrates its 25th anniversary, Jagex is focusing on revitalizing the game with these exciting changes.
RuneScape 3 is a long-running online game, still popular with hundreds of thousands of players. While it offers a distinct experience compared to other MMOs, it has faced its share of issues. These controversies led to the rise of Old School RuneScape, a separate game designed to recreate the classic RuneScape experience. The two games are now developed by different teams with differing visions, resulting in a divided player base. Seeing Old School RuneScape’s growing success, the RuneScape 3 team plans to make significant changes in 2026.

Jagex has revealed its plans for RuneScape 3 through 2026, calling it a game-changing update that will focus on improving and expanding the game. A major part of this update is Havenhythe, a massive new area that will be the largest expansion in RuneScape history. It will be released in two parts – the first in spring and the second later in the year – and will include new quests and bosses. Jagex also confirmed that the Player Avatar Refresh, a project to significantly improve how player characters look and function, is still underway. Originally started in 2021 but paused in 2022, it’s now expected to launch in late spring.
Players can look forward to several updates, including a completely redesigned user interface, customizable visual options, and a renewed artistic direction for the game starting in 2026. While RuneScape is known for its distinctive look, the developers feel that style has become diluted over time and want to recapture its original charm. They’re also rethinking daily tasks, as the current system doesn’t quite fit the core RuneScape experience. A major combat update is planned for February, and this summer will bring a revamp of player-owned houses, with a focus on making them more social and enjoyable to customize.
A major change has just happened in RuneScape 3: Treasure Hunter has been removed from the game. Jagex announced this plan back in June 2025. Added in 2014, Treasure Hunter let players buy keys for a chance to win things like extra experience and in-game money, which many felt made the game unfair. Jagex recognizes this was a mistake and hopes removing it will improve the game for the future. It took a long time to remove Treasure Hunter because it was so integrated into how people played. Players will have a year to use any remaining items, but eventually, they’ll disappear completely. It’s a bold move by Jagex, and they’re hoping it will benefit the game in the long run.
The upcoming changes to RuneScape 3 look promising, and many hope removing Treasure Hunter will revitalize the game. However, it will be challenging to win back players who left, especially those who now play Old School RuneScape. Old School RuneScape continues to thrive, providing a unique, classic MMORPG experience. Both games have big plans for 2026, and it will be fascinating to see how they compete with each other in the coming year.
