Hytale Farming Guide

In Hytale, players can grow crops to get ingredients for cooking, items to trade, and things to decorate with. While farming is pretty straightforward, new players might be a little unsure how it fits into the overall game.

This guide walks you through everything you need to know about farming in Hytale, from finding suitable land and making tools, to planting, fertilizing, and finally, harvesting your crops. It covers the entire farming process, step by step.

Hytale Farming Guide

To begin farming in Hytale, you’ll need a Farmer’s Workbench. This special crafting station is where you can make all the tools, seeds, and other items needed for growing crops.

How to Craft Farming Tools in Hytale

Once you’ve finished building the Farmer’s Workbench, head over to the Farming tab and make these three items to plant your first crop.

If you put items in storage chests near a crafting station, like the Farmer’s Workbench, you can use those items at the station without needing to move them into your inventory first, as long as the chest is within six blocks of the station.

How to Get Seeds in Hytale

In Hytale, you’ll need crop seeds to grow plants on your farm. You can get these seeds in a couple of ways: either by crafting them at a Farmer’s Workbench under the Seeds section, or by finding them as treasure in chests throughout the world.

With a basic Farmer’s Workbench, you can only make Wheat and Cabbage seeds, so those will probably be the first crops you grow. As you improve your Workbench, you’ll be able to craft seeds for more types of plants.

How to Gather Water in Hytale

Before planting any seeds, make sure you have water! Find a lake, pond, or river on the map, then use your Wooden Bucket (right-click on the water) to fill it up.

Okay, so I grabbed a bucket and filled it with water, then headed back to my farm. I dug a little one-block deep hole and poured the water in. Now I’ve got a handy water source right there – super convenient for refilling my watering can whenever I need to!

The Watering Can needs to be refilled after every 20 uses.

How to Plant Crops in Hytale

To start farming, get the Crude Hoe and right-click on soil blocks like Dirt or Grass to till them. You can’t till hard surfaces like stone or marble – the hoe only works on land where crops can grow.

After preparing your farmland, get your seeds ready and plant them in the soil. Then, use the Watering Can on your newly planted crops to make them grow 2.5 times faster.

If you have a Fertilizer Bag (made at a Tier 3 Farmer’s Workbench), you can use the fertilizer inside to make your crops grow twice as fast. Each bag can enrich up to five blocks of prepared soil before it’s empty.

Plants can still grow without water or fertilizer, but it takes much longer for them to mature. For example, the table below shows how much faster carrots grow when the soil is enriched with nutrients.

Carrot Crop Growth Rate
No Water + No Fertilizer 30 minutes
Water + No Fertilizer 10 minutes
Water + Fertilizer 5 minutes

How to Harvest Crops in Hytale

Once a crop is fully grown, you can harvest it by pressing the Interact key (F). If you hold down the Interact key, you can harvest several crops at once with just one press.

When you harvest crops, you get two things: the crops themselves, and something called Essence of Life. For instance, if you grow 10 wheat plants and harvest them all when they’re ready, you’ll receive 10 wheat and 10 Essence of Life.

In very rare cases, it is possible to obtain Eternal Seeds when harvesting a crop.
