While not strictly necessary for survival, food is still important in Hytale for keeping your health and stamina high. Eating restores health, and a good meal will actually increase your maximum health and stamina, plus give you faster health recovery. The better the food, the stronger the benefits! You’ll need ingredients like milk and cheese to make the best meals, which aren’t difficult to find, though getting them can be a little challenging in the current early access version of Hytale.
Where to Get Milk in Hytale
Okay, so you can get milk in Hytale from cows, but it’s not like they just give it to you! You actually need to craft a Wooden Bucket and then right-click on a cow to collect it. It’s cool you can do that, but honestly, the animal farming stuff isn’t quite finished yet in the game, and it does cause a few little issues right now.
- Players can’t tame cows (yet)
- Cows will always try to run away from players
- Cows have a tendency to randomly disappear even when corralled
- A bucket of Milk is only good for one block of Cheese
- Cows can only be milked once per day
Players should expect these to become non-issues once the proper systems are patched into the game.
You can find small groups of cows in the forest areas of Zone 1, but they aren’t super common. When you do find them, it’s important to be prepared! Cows often travel together, so it’s a good idea to bring several buckets with you when you go looking for them.
You can guide cows into enclosed spaces like pens with a little work. Keeping them in sturdy, boxed-in areas prevents them from running away.
How to Make Cheese in Hytale
You can craft Cheese at any Chef’s Stove. The best part is, you don’t need to upgrade the stove first! As long as you have Milk, you can start making Cheese right away. The recipe indicates that any kind of Milk will work, suggesting you can obtain Milk from various animals.
You can get milk from Mosshorns, but you can’t use it to make cheese—try drinking it and see what happens!
As we discussed, it takes one bucket of Milk to craft each Cheese. Recipes like Caesar Salad then require one Cheese to make. While Caesar Salad is a good source of healing and nourishment in Hytale, players will need a steady supply of both Milk and Cheese to make it consistently. If that’s difficult to achieve, other food options might be more practical due to easier access to ingredients.
Making fruit and vegetable pies is simple if you have the basic tools. Don’t forget to place fish traps by the water to collect Salt Blocks – you’ll need these for certain recipes.
