In Hytale, you’ll gather resources like ores and wood to create buildings. As you explore, you’ll also encounter lots of animals roaming the forests.
Animals provide useful materials like leather, but they can also be valuable companions. Chickens give us eggs, sheep provide wool, and horses offer a way to travel – so having a few animals around can be really beneficial.
Let’s break down everything you need to know about luring, taming, and capturing animals in Hytale.
How to Lure Animals

To start, you’ll need to attract animals back to your base. Luckily, this is easy in Hytale – all you need is a feed bag to do it.
First, create a Farmer’s Workbench. You’ll need six tree logs and 20 plant fiber to build it. Once you have those materials, craft the workbench near your camp.
To get the feed bag, you will need:
- 10 Wheat
- 5 Vegetables
- 5 Fruits
- 10 Essence of Life
First, craft a feed bag using the items at the Farmer’s Workbench. Then, when you hold the feed bag and approach animals, they’ll come closer to you for a short time.
During our tests, we found that some animals weren’t interested in the feed bag, but these animals were:
- Boars
- Chickens
- Turkeys
- Deer
- Pigeons
We haven’t tested the feed bag on all animal types yet. Also, while some animals will readily approach the bag, they can become disinterested and difficult to attract back to it.
Unlike many animals, horses aren’t simply drawn to food. To approach a horse safely, it’s best to offer a carrot – they’re more likely to come close if you have one, and less likely to be frightened.
How to Capture Animals
Besides attracting animals, it’s important to learn how to catch them. This way, you can safely put them in a pen and keep them from getting out.
To catch animals, you’ll need to craft a capture crate. You can build it at a Farmer’s Workbench using these materials:
- 4 Wood
- 50 Essence of Life
After making this item, simply hold it and approach a small animal. Left-click on the animal to capture it. This will work on these creatures:
- Foal
- Lamb
- Rabbits
- Baby Pigs
- Meerkats
- Frogs
- Calves
- Mice
- Squirrels
Each capture crate can only hold one animal. If you need to catch more than one, you’ll need a separate crate for each one. The good news is, these crates don’t break, so you can reuse them endlessly.
How to Tame Animals
Hytale’s animal taming options are limited. While you can attract animals with food or trap them in crates, there’s no way to actually keep them as pets or companions.

If you confine an animal, it will generally stay put, but will attempt to escape if given a chance. Likewise, a horse will wander off after being ridden unless you have a treat to keep its attention when you get off.
Because Hytale is still in development, we expect the game’s creature-taming features to be expanded and improved over time.
