A key part of games like MIO: Memories in Orbit – and the Metroidvania genre in general – is gaining new movement abilities. These abilities open up previously inaccessible areas, guide your progress through the game, and prevent you from stumbling upon locations before you’re ready.
In MIO: Memories in Orbit, learning to grapple onto green crystals is the first movement ability you should get. This skill is called the Hairpin, and here’s how to unlock it.
How To Get The Hairpin Ability (Hook Skill) In MIO Memories in Orbit
In MIO: Memories in Orbit, you need to obtain the Hairpin ability to unlock the hook and use the green crystals. You earn the Hairpin by defeating Egis.
Once the upgrade is installed by the NPC, Mio will briefly lose consciousness. This triggers a tutorial where you’ll learn how to use Mio’s Hairpin skill. You’ll need to complete a short obstacle course to progress, effectively teaching you how her hook works.
How To Reach Egis In MIO Memories in Orbit
Okay, so if you want to find Egis and get the Hairpin skill in MIO: Memories in Orbit, the first thing you gotta do is head up to the Apartments – you can get there using the elevator on the top floor.
Okay, so once you get to that locked door heading to Metropolis, you need to figure out how to get down to the next level. Then, just keep going to the right – that’s the way forward! It’s a pretty straightforward path after that.
You’ll eventually come across a locked door in The Spine. It’s the one with a hand visible on it.
Free the robot, Rad, and he’ll reward Mio with the Analyser. This special tool shows you how much health enemies have left, helping you decide if you can win the fight. The Analyser takes up 5 module slots on Mio.
You can make changes at the overseer’s station. Opening the door there gives Mio access to the elevator that leads to the Apartments, letting you quickly visit the overseer for upgrades.
From the door, turn left and walk straight ahead. Continue following the path to the left, and you’ll eventually come to a large room where you can continue heading downwards.
Okay, so you just follow the path until you see an opening to the right, and then stick to the right. Seriously, don’t go down any of those other paths! If you do it right, you’ll quickly find a wall that Mio can break, which takes you to the next area. And thankfully, there’s a Nacre Basin there too, so you can top up your health before the boss fight – you’ll need it!
Once ready, head down and enter the room to battle Egis.
If you don’t defeat Egis on your first attempt, the shortcut you found will come in handy. Luckily, Egis is designed as an early boss, so his attacks are fairly predictable, and he pauses often, giving you opportunities to react.
After Egis is defeated, head down and interact with the pipe. This will teach Mio the Hairpin skill, letting her grapple onto the green crystals found throughout the Ark.
