As a seasoned gamer and ardent follower of all things Batman, I must say that the arrival of The Penguin on our screens is like a breath of fresh air. Having grown up with Tim Burton’s Batman trilogy and Christopher Nolan’s Dark Knight saga, I was initially skeptical about another take on this iconic character. But Matt Reeves’ gritty and grounded vision for Gotham has truly won me over.

The Penguin has had a promising debut on traditional television broadcasts, and its daring spinoff appears ready to introduce an under-the-radar Batman adversary, offering a fresh backstory that aligns seamlessly with Matt Reeves’ groundbreaking reinterpretation of Gotham City.

The Batman was a brilliant move and quickly became a timeless classic amidst the backdrop of the DCEU’s mainline burning out. Its dark, realistic portrayal of Batman and Gotham set it apart from the more extravagant antics of the Justice League movie. Originally conceived as a standalone production, director Matt Reeves later disclosed that ideas for a complete trilogy were under consideration after the success of the initial film. Moreover, plans for sequels and even spin-off projects were in development, however, many of these were halted by Reeves to align with the overall vision for the franchise, despite his works being self-contained Elseworld stories.

It’s great news that The Penguin managed to survive the tough times at Warner Bros. and eventually reached home viewers. In the process, it incorporated many elements from other projects that didn’t make it, such as the character Victor Zsasz, a lesser-known enemy of Batman who has been suggested by fans for future appearances, including in The Batman: Part II. In the first episode itself, we meet Victor Aguilar, a young aspiring criminal who encounters trouble with the main character. Instead of receiving a harsh lesson, Victor is taken under Oz’s wing, setting him on a path that viewers are still trying to predict the end of. Although this storyline promises to be intriguing, what stands out more is the speculation that this Victor could be Zsasz.

Among the DC Universe’s villains, Jason Todd (also known as the “Joker’s former sidekick” or “the Red Hood”), is less extraordinary compared to others, yet his psychological profile and actions are exceptionally chilling. A typical human being without any superpowers, he exhibits extreme levels of psychopathy and masochism, finding pleasure in murder and self-mutilation. His descent into villainy began following the loss of his parents in an accident and subsequent squandering of his family fortune due to gambling addiction, which he adopted as a means to cope with depression. An attempted suicide was thwarted by a knife attack, pushing him over the edge to commit his first murder and adopt a sinister worldview.

Just like Batman and its upcoming sequels, The Penguin belongs to an Elseworlds series that isn’t tied to any broader canon or continuity beyond itself and its sequels. So, it’s not unexpected that the creators might decide to alter a character’s origins. Although this change is significant, since the character is still called ‘Penguin,’ it’s worth considering that this version of Penguin could turn out to be the villain from the comics. Interestingly, the show has been using a shortened version of Batman’s name instead of his comics-accurate one, so the possibility of Mr. Aguilar becoming Mr. Zsasz becomes more plausible even though ‘Oz Cobb’ is used instead of Penguin’s usual name.

Although many Batman villains are worthy of their own TV series, the extensive roster makes it challenging to accommodate everyone individually. Yet, if Victor Aguilar can effectively portray Victor Zsasz, Reeves could be onto a winning formula by introducing all the intriguing DC characters for his future Batman-centric universe. For now, fans can only speculate about how things will unfold, but having The Penguin as a starting point isn’t too shabby!
