The Flames of Fortune Walkthrough - Zelda: Echoes of Wisdom

As a seasoned gamer with countless hours logged into various titles under my belt, I must say that “The Flames of Fortune” side quest in Echoes of Wisdom is one for the books. It’s not your everyday fetch quest; it’s a test of patience and quick reflexes that will leave you either cursing or cheering – depending on how quickly Zelda can navigate the volcanic landscape.

In the game Echoes of Wisdom, there are just 50 side missions. Many are simple or involve beating bosses, but some, like “The Flames of Fortune,” can be time-consuming if Zelda isn’t swift. This specific side mission in Echoes of Wisdom is found in the Eldin Volcano area and necessitates using Tri’s Grab Ability to finish it successfully. Prior to embarking on “The Flames of Fortune,” you must first complete the Eldin Temple and seal the rift.

To the left of where you discovered Elder Silv in Lizalfos Burrow, there’s a cliff reachable with Climber or Platboom Echo. At the summit, you’ll encounter a Goron standing near a tiny hot spring and a flow of lava. Speak to this Goron to initiate “The Flames of Fortune” side quest. This task involves transporting a large glowing ember from the Goron on the left (Limme) outside Goron City’s entrance. You can pick up items with the Grab Ability (X-button), but you must do so carefully, as the ember will put out and shatter if it doesn’t touch lava. If the ember goes out or breaks, you’ll need to return to the Goron for a replacement. Also, be cautious when carrying the ember, as Zelda will drop anything she’s holding if hit by enemies during transport.

It might be beneficial for you to tackle the monsters lurking around Lizalfos Burrow prior to embarking on your quest, should you believe it will simplify things.

Best Route for The Flames of Fortune (Echoes of Wisdom)

By examining the provided map, you’ll spot that your journey to Goron City lies directly towards the southeast. For a speedy arrival, leap off the cliff and descend into the vicinity of the Lizalfos Burrow. Continue moving rightward and leap down again near the Smoothie Shop. Keep heading right to deliver the coal. To keep it burning, you’ll have to drag the coal across the heated patches on the ground. Be cautious not to leave it in lava for too long, as it might sink if left submerged for an extended period.

While not required, having the following Echoes can make this side quest a bit easier:

  • Flying Tile
  • Platboom

Flying Tiles make it very easy to cover ground quickly. Platbooms are useful if you need to reach a higher ledge. Be careful using Platbooms, since they’ll knock back Zelda when summoned. This can cause her to drop the coal and possibly break it. As such, it may be better to just use the Flying Tiles. You can get the Flying Tile from the Gerudo Sanctum dungeon, or from a cave at the far northwest of Gerudo Desert. The Platboom Echo is located down a ladder behind the Gerudo Palace. You’ll need a Crawler to climb up the cliff, or you can stack objects such as tables or crates.

Here’s another way to complete the quest (refer to the pink line in the above image):

  1. Make sure Zelda is holding the coal (X-button), and walk towards the edge of the platform, facing the Lizalfos Burrow.
  2. Summon a Flying Tile, and ride it as far as it’ll go. If you notice it’ll stop over the lava, jump off early to land somewhere safer.
  3. If your coal is burning out, carry it along the lava patches.
  4. After riding the tile, keep going east. You’ll find yourself on the shelf above Goron City (on the map) where you’ll come across Tellus monsters. Be sure to “refresh” the coal over the lava spots.
  5. Jump down one more ledge to land on the ground right next to Goron City.
  6. Bring the coal to the Goron with the speech bubble over his head.
