What to Do First in Hytale?

Hytale is a huge game with tons of options, so it’s easy to feel lost when you first start playing. You begin with an empty inventory and no specific objectives (especially in Exploration mode). If you’re feeling overwhelmed, don’t worry – that’s perfectly normal! This guide will walk you through the essential first steps for new Hytale players. We’ll also provide a straightforward plan to help you develop your character and acquire better gear.

Hytale is currently in early access, meaning it’s still under development and doesn’t have all of its features yet. This guide covers the most important things to do in the game right now, but expect more content and ways to progress as updates and expansions are released in the future.

Hytale Progression Plan Outline

TL;DR

  1. Craft tools
  2. Build a shelter
  3. Make equipment from the following ores:
    • Copper
    • Iron
    • Thorium
    • Cobalt
    • Adamantite
  4. Visit the Forgotten Temple
  5. Upgrade your base and gear
  6. Ancient Gateway Maps

Okay, so I’m gonna break down all this stuff in a sec, but if you’re totally new to Hytale, that list I just gave you? That’s basically how you’ll level up and get better. You can honestly play however you want, but if you want things to go a little smoother and feel less confusing, I’d recommend using that as a starting point. It’s just a rough guide, though!

In Hytale, discovering new areas is key to advancement. You need to explore to find materials, craft better equipment, and generally move forward in the game – staying put won’t get you anywhere.

Crafting Basic Tools

Your first task is to create some essential tools and weapons. However, instead of breaking down trees and stone, you’ll collect Sticks and Rubble. These materials can be used to make simple equipment for gathering resources and protecting yourself.

Sticks and Rubble are both found on the ground. You can get Sticks by breaking tall grass or small trees. Rubble is usually found sitting on top of rocks.

When you’ve collected enough materials, press Tab to open your inventory and access the crafting menu. Craft some basic items, then continue gathering resources to get ready to build a base.

Building Your First House

You don’t need to make anything fancy, but you do need to have enough space for the following:

  • A bed or bedroll
  • 12 different crafting stations
  • 5–6 large chests
  • A farm

As you play, you’ll collect a lot of materials. To make the most of them, you’ll need various workbenches. If you can’t use an item right away, hold onto it – it might be useful later on!

Best Base Locations

In Hytale‘s Exploration mode, each player experiences a uniquely generated world. If you get to pick where you build your base, we suggest finding a spot close to water and a red or orange autumn forest. You’ll need water to collect Salt Blocks, and the autumn forests provide essential resources like Bloodcap Mushrooms and different kinds of wood that you’ll need later in the game.

Gear Progression

In Hytale, equipment generally improves as you progress. Weapons, tools, and armor come in different tiers, meaning you’ll eventually replace weaker items with stronger ones. The material used to craft an item determines its tier. Currently, there are four tiers of equipment in the game, ranked from least to most powerful:

  1. Copper tier
  2. Iron tier
  3. Thorium tier
  4. Cobalt tier
  5. Adamantite tier

Players will have choices when it comes to gear. Instead of just one option for each level, like Iron Armor, there will be different armor sets to choose from. These sets will offer similar protection but also unique benefits. For example, the Trork Warrior set provides a boost to Charged Attack damage, but it can’t be crafted and won’t last as long as Iron Armor. This means players can tailor their gear to their preferred playstyle.

You don’t have to make items from the previous level before moving on to the next one. While it’s possible to jump directly to Cobalt tier, it will likely be challenging if you only have basic weapons and no armor.

The Forgotten Temple

Players can access the Forgotten Temple whenever they want. Look for ruined temples throughout the world – portals to the Temple are hidden beneath them. Simply find a ruin, go down to the basement, and step through the portal. This will take you to the Forgotten Temple, which acts as a central meeting point.

Hypixel is currently still working on the Forgotten Temple. While it’s not finished yet, there are already a few activities you can enjoy within it.

  • Interact with the altar at the end of the path to record and view Memories
  • Interact with the NPC vendors to buy crafting materials, ingredients, recipes, and more

Upgrade Your Base and Gear

A key part of getting better at Hytale is upgrading your workbenches. Lower-level workbenches can’t create everything, so you’ll need to gather resources to improve them. Check each workbench to see what materials it needs, and make a note of those items before heading out to collect them. Upgrading your crafting stations will allow you to create more powerful items.

Seriously, if you’re playing, you need to set up a farm at your base. I always do! It’s so useful for growing ingredients for cooking, and more importantly, for getting those Essences of Life – you’ll definitely need those!

While you explore, you’ll find equipment dropped by monsters or hidden in chests. Be sure to check these items – some might be upgrades to what you’re already using, as discussed in the Gear Progression section.

Players exploring the tundra may find hostile enemies called Outlanders, who sometimes drop special weapons called Doomed Outlander weapons. If you’re already collecting Shadoweave Scraps, it’s worth checking for these weapons when they become available.

Ancient Gateway

If you’ve already completed the previous steps, consider building an Ancient Gateway. This device uses Fragments to open portals to brand new, randomly created maps. These maps have unique themes and will offer a completely different experience than what you’re used to. Simply use a Fragment, step through the portal, and explore as much as you can before time runs out.

This feature is a WIP as of writing this guide, so don’t expect much from it just yet.
