On January 21st, three older Far Cry games offered through PlayStation Plus received significant performance upgrades. The biggest change is that they now support 60fps on the PS5, making them run much more smoothly on Sony’s latest console.
Players with PlayStation Plus have been able to enjoy Far Cry Primal through the Ubisoft+ Classics catalog since December 2022. Far Cry 3 and Far Cry 3: Blood Dragon have been available even longer, launching with the service back in May 2022. Now, all three games have received significant improvements to their performance.
60fps Patches Now Available for Far Cry 3, Blood Dragon, and Primal
Updates went live early on January 21st (Eastern Time). Before the release, a mysterious hint led some fans to correctly guess that certain Far Cry games would gain support for 60 frames per second on the PlayStation 5. These performance improvements – doubling the frame rate from 30fps – are also now available for Far Cry 3, Far Cry 3: Blood Dragon, and Far Cry Primal on the Xbox Series X/S, resulting in a significantly smoother gameplay experience.
New Update Also Fixes Far Cry Primal PS5 Crashes
I’m really excited to hear that Ubisoft is still supporting their older titles! They haven’t released full patch notes yet, but it looks like Far Cry Primal is getting some love on the PlayStation 5. Apparently, version 1.04 should fix all those frustrating crashes people were experiencing. Ubisoft said the problem was with how the PS5 was handling the older game, but they didn’t go into a lot of detail. Still, it’s great news for anyone who wants to revisit Oros without their game constantly freezing!
Ubisoft Is Still Considering Future Updates for Older Far Cry Games
Following the recent update on January 21st, the official Far Cry Twitter account has been responding to fan feedback. One fan requested a New Game Plus mode for Blood Dragon, and a Ubisoft representative responded that while it’s not currently planned, they’ll pass the suggestion on to the development team for future consideration. This suggests that Ubisoft may continue to support and update some of its older Far Cry games, and the new 60fps patch wasn’t a one-time event.
A Ubisoft representative recently responded to a fan’s long-standing issue with the weapons in the Far Cry 3 Classic Edition. The fan pointed out that many automatic weapons feel identical to each other. Ubisoft said they would share this feedback with the developers. The problem stems from the remaster using fewer unique weapon sounds than the original game, which makes powerful guns like the MBP .50 and the AK-47 sound too similar. While it’s been eight years since the game came out, Ubisoft acknowledging the issue suggests they might consider addressing it, even now.
What’s Next for Far Cry
Game Rant discovered job postings indicating that Ubisoft Toronto has been developing a new Far Cry game since at least 2023. Following a recent company reorganization, Ubisoft Toronto is now known as Vantage Studios, and is a core part of Ubisoft’s game development teams. Vantage Studios, designated as “CH1,” is now responsible for creating games in the Far Cry, Rainbow Six, and Assassin’s Creed franchises.
If development of Far Cry 7—or the next Far Cry game—started around 2023, we might see it released in 2028, given how long it typically takes to make big-budget games. However, this is just an estimate. Ubisoft recently changed how it operates, which has already pushed back the release dates of several games. The company announced on January 21st that seven projects have been delayed, but they haven’t said which ones yet.
