What If Sabo Became a Pirate? Discover the Alternate One Piece Universe!

Summary

  • Sabo wanted to become a pirate like his brothers but was shot down early on by a Celestial Dragon.
  • If Sabo had set sail as a child, he might not have survived long in the dangerous East Blue.
  • Waiting until he was older to set out may have led Sabo to become as powerful and notorious as Ace.

Sabo has consistently captured readers’ attention within the narrative of “One Piece.” Making an abrupt entrance during Luffy’s flashback sequence, Sabo swiftly gained popularity among fans as he filled a long-standing void left by the demise of Ace. To numerous viewers, while Sabo may not be identical to Ace, he embodied a fitting successor in terms of both the storyline and character development.

Ever since I first stumbled upon the world of One Piece, I’ve been captivated by the story of Sabo, whose dreams mirrored those of his brothers Ace and Luffy – to conquer the seas as a fearless pirate. Tragically, his voyage never truly started. Now, as a dedicated fan, I can’t help but wonder: What would Sabo have been like if he’d embarked on that grand adventure? What treasures would he have discovered, and what battles would he have fought? The thought alone sends shivers down my spine!

Sabo Wanted To Become A Pirate In One Piece

His Journey Ended Early At The Hands Of The Celestial Dragons

In Marineford’s flashback, we learn that Luffy, Ace, and a third brother named Sabo exist. Noble-born Sabo renounced the corrupt ways of the nobility in One Piece and yearned to embark on a pirate voyage. After encounters with Luffy and Ace, Sabo began his pirating journey and swore to traverse the open seas someday. However, following the destruction of Gray Terminal, Sabo embarked on his pirate adventure prematurely, setting sail as a child. Yet, he was swiftly shot down and seemingly perished at the hands of a visiting Celestial Dragon.

I want to see the world and write a book about it! – Sabo

Fortunately, I observed Monkey D. Dragon, a member of the Revolutionary Army, successfully rescue Sabo and integrate him into his cause. Over time, following intense training, Sabo transformed into an exceptional combatant, ultimately climbing the ranks to hold the position of Chief of Staff – making him the right-hand man of the Revolutionary Army. Post Ace’s demise, Sabo – who had lost his memories due to a past event – regained consciousness and encountered his remaining sibling during the Dressrosa Arc in the captivating world of One Piece. This encounter allowed Luffy to learn that not only is Sabo alive, but he’s thriving as well.

What Would Happen if Sabo Had Become A Pirate?

He May Not Make It Far As A Child

  • Sabo May Be Defeated Early If He Set Out As A Child
  • Dragon Still May Have Saved Him In This Case

Given Sabo’s background, it was originally planned that he would become a pirate like his two brothers. This leads many fans to ponder about Sabo’s distinct character development if he had embarked on his sea voyage and pursued his initial aspirations. While the outcome of these hypothetical adventures is uncertain, they would largely depend on the age at which the aspiring pirate would have set sail.

Initially, despite Sabo’s strength, had he truly ventured out to sea on the day he was struck down by a Celestial Dragon and embarked on a pirate life, it’s plausible he wouldn’t have achieved the same level of success as Luffy or Ace, given they left at 17. Instead, without the intervention of a Celestial Dragon and Monkey D. Dragon that day, Sabo might have faced a more unfortunate destiny within the East Blue. Yet, if there had been no attack by the Celestial Dragon, it’s possible Dragon would have attempted to recruit him again, effectively cutting short his pirate career once more.

If Sabo Left As An Adult He May Be As Notorious As Ace

The Two May Have Even Set Out Together

If Sabo delayed his pirate career until age 17, training with Ace and Luffy all along, he could potentially achieve a greater level of power within the series. Given their similar strength as children, it’s plausible that Sabo would become a pirate with a reputation and power comparable to Ace, had he been given the opportunity. Moreover, even if he didn’t join Whitebeard’s crew alongside Ace, Sabo would likely have assisted Luffy in his attempt to rescue Ace at Marineford. This assistance could have significantly altered the course of the battle.

What scares me the most is losing my identity and personality as I get engulfed by this nation, transforming into someone entirely new. – Translated from Sabo’s sentence.

While it’s intriguing to speculate how Sabo may have fit as a pirate, Luffy’s brother serves admirably within the Revolutionary Army. It’s challenging to envision him in any other role throughout the storyline. Here’s hoping that when Sabo gets an opportunity to reappear, his role as a One Piece revolutionary will be solidified even more.
