Mystery Games Are Undergoing A Renaissance

As a seasoned gamer with over two decades under my belt, I can confidently say that this year has been nothing short of a renaissance for mystery games. From the return of long-lost classics like the Famicom Detective Club series to modern indie hits like Disco Elysium, there’s no denying the allure of solving puzzles and unraveling intricate narratives.

During the approaching Halloween season, enthusiasts of mystery games have an abundance of choices. The current resurgence of mystery games started with “Emio – the Smiling Man,” an unanticipated addition to the “Famicom Detective Club” series. This was then followed by the “Ace Attorney Investigations” duology, which included the highly-anticipated official English version of the second game, “Prosecutor’s Gambit.” Unfortunately, a third title, marketed sparsely, is the remake of a classic Japanese mystery titled “The Hokkaido Serial Murder Case: The Okhotsk Disappearance Memories In Ice, Tearful Figurine,” which is most recognized for its lengthy title and being created by Yuji Horii, the mastermind behind the “Dragon Quest” series.

Over the last few years, t The Secret Salami, The Case of the Golden Idol, and others.

Nintendo Takes A Dark Turn With Emio –The Smiling Man

  • Release Date: August 29, 2024
  • Platforms: Nintendo Switch

Nintendo left fans puzzled with a cryptic trailer resembling found footage, posing the question: “Who is Emio?” Speculation varied from a new survival horror game to a Silent Hill spin-off, but the real answer was unexpected – it’s the first installment in nearly 30 years of the Famicom Detective Club series. Known for its dark themes among Nintendo’s internal creations, Emio brings back the Detective Club to delve into a chilling serial murder case that appears linked to an unsettling urban legend.

Despite the remakes of the initial games, The Missing Heir and The Girl Who Stands Behind, in 2021, many fans felt that the Famicom Detective Club series was an artifact from the golden age of adventure gaming, destined to remain in the past. However, the arrival of Emio has brought a delightful twist, suggesting there might be more installments of this classic series on the horizon.

Ace Attorney Investigations Collection Completes The Series

Originally, only Ace Attorney Investigations had an official English translation, but its sequel, Prosecutor’s Path, never did. Various hypotheses about this omission suggested that it could be due to mixed reception for Investigations or a strategic decision to emphasize the series’ latest primary title, Dual Destinies, rather than focusing on spin-offs. However, in 2024, both games featuring the popular recurring prosecutor character Miles Edgeworth were remastered and released together on the Nintendo Switch as a bundle.

Now, for the first time, all main series Ace Attorney titles are available in English. Capcom’s plans for the future of the series remain unclear, but it’s definitely not impossible that another main series Ace Attorney game could be in the works, possibly bringing back Phoenix Wright, Apollo Justice, or Athena Cykes or introducing a new protagonist entirely.

The Hokkaido Serial Murder Case Flew Under The Radar

Back in the day, I stumbled upon this intriguing mystery game titled “Hokkaido Serial Murder Case,” which surprisingly received minimal marketing buzz for both Nintendo Switch and PC platforms. In this game, you play as an unnamed detective, tasked with investigating a chilling series of murders that have been sprinkled across the Hokkaido Prefecture in Japan. Interestingly enough, this 1984 creation was largely a standalone sequel to Yuji Horii’s detective game from 1983 – “The Portopia Serial Murder Case.

The game titled “Portopia,” often recognized as one of the most impactful games in history by Eiji Aonuma and Hideo Kojima, encountered a disheartening re-launch incorporating AI technology. This re-release, handled by Square Enix, was intended to showcase their AI capabilities; however, it received heavy criticism from both critics and players. Thankfully, the remastered version of “Hokkaido” does not emphasize AI and instead offers a more refined experience, with upgrades like a revamped command menu and voiced dialogues. Enthusiasts of mystery games seeking fresh and captivating experiences should definitely explore “The Hokkaido Serial Murder Case, “which they might have overlooked. Here’s hoping these titles inspire more remasters of classic mystery games and future releases within the genre soon.
