Microsoft Discontinuing HoloLens 2 With No Plans For Another Headset

Microsoft Discontinuing HoloLens 2 With No Plans For Another Headset

As a long-time gamer with memories of the first HoloLens back in the day, it’s always bittersweet to see hardware like this going away. The HoloLens 2 was a fascinating piece of tech that opened up new possibilities for gaming and immersive experiences. I can’t help but feel a twinge of nostalgia as I remember the thrill of those early demos, where virtual objects seemed to magically appear in my living room.

Microsoft has decided to stop manufacturing its HoloLens 2 augmented reality headset, as initially reported by UploadVR. This move comes five years since the device was first released in 2019.

If you’re one of the owners, your headset will continue to get updates addressing critical security concerns and software setbacks until December 31, 2027. After this date, all support for the device will cease.

For those with an original HoloLens headset, support for that device ends on December 10, 2024.

Currently, there are no upcoming plans for a new HoloLens headset from Microsoft. In 2022, it was announced by Business Insider that the development of HoloLens 3 had been halted. This news was followed by several rounds of layoffs in the mixed-reality department at Microsoft over the subsequent years.

Rather than introducing new devices, Microsoft plans to continue supporting the existing one for an additional three years, with a greater emphasis on software development and strategic partnerships. Furthermore, they’ve expanded their Xbox Cloud Gaming service to be accessible through Meta’s Quest virtual reality headsets.
