As a big Prince of Persia fan, I was really disappointed to hear Ubisoft has cancelled the remake of The Sands of Time. They first announced it way back in 2020, and it’s been a bit of a troubled project ever since. Originally, it was supposed to come out in January 2021, but they pushed it back to March 2021 after a lot of us fans weren’t happy with how the game looked – even though they were using their newest game engine! It’s a shame it won’t be coming out now.
Originally planned for release in March, the Prince of Persia remake was delayed indefinitely just a month before launch. Development then shifted from Ubisoft Mumbai to Ubisoft Montreal. Despite promises of a 2026 release shared at the Ubisoft Forward event, Ubisoft recently cancelled the remake. This cancellation is one of six games Ubisoft has scrapped this year, and it’s part of a larger trend of cancelled projects at the company over the past few years.
Ubisoft Issues Statement on Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time Remake on Twitter
So, Ubisoft finally addressed what’s happening with the Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time remake on Twitter. Basically, they said they’re cancelling it. They know a lot of us fans are going to be bummed, and they admit the game could have been great. But they weren’t able to get it to the quality we all expect. They said finishing it would have taken way too much time and money, more than they were willing to put into it. It’s a tough break, honestly.
Ubisoft didn’t share specifics about the challenges during the development of the Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time remake, but explained they wanted to avoid releasing a game that didn’t live up to the original’s quality. While the remake is on hold, Ubisoft confirmed Prince of Persia remains a key brand for them. The company is now shifting its focus to improving its existing open-world games and live-service titles.
The decision to cancel the Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time remake is more disappointing news from Ubisoft, and another setback for a once-beloved franchise. Last year, Ubisoft also cancelled a sequel to Prince of Persia: The Lost Crown – the first major Prince of Persia game in 14 years – and moved the development team to different projects. With this remake of a classic title also cancelled, it feels like the series is losing momentum just as it seemed to be making a comeback.
Honestly, it’s a bit frustrating hearing Ubisoft say the Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time remake needed more time and money, especially five years after they first announced it. It makes you wonder what they’ve been doing with the project all this time! They haven’t said what caused the delays, and it’s kind of weird considering rumors pointed to a release this month. It just feels like a lot of time and money has already gone into it, and we’re still waiting.
