Risk of Rain 2: Artifact of Rebirth Unlock Guide & Explanation

Risk of Rain 2: Artifact of Rebirth Unlock Guide & Explanation

As a seasoned adventurer who’s traversed the perilous landscapes of Risk of Rain 2 countless times, I must say that the Artifact of Rebirth is one of my favorites! Unlike some of its counterparts with their cryptic downsides or tricky mechanics, this one offers pure, unadulterated power.

Incorporating the Artifact of Rebirth, there are now 19 unique Artifacts to discover, activate, and employ in your subsequent adventures in Risk of Rain 2, enhancing your gameplay experiences. Many of these artifacts in this game come with extraordinary advantages, albeit often accompanied by a catch or trade-off. For instance, the Artifact of Enigma grants you an Equipment item at the outset; however, it changes equipment for every use.

However, not all of them have downsides as anyone who has used the Artifact of Command can verify, and the Artifact of Rebirth is another one of these ‘no downsides’ options. That said, you aren’t heading to Bulwark’s Ambry to unlock this Artifact like all the rest, and the actual function of the Artifact of Rebirth can be a bit confusing, so let’s go over exactly how it works and how to obtain it in Risk of Rain 2.

Artifact of Rebirth Overview

What This Artifact Actually Does & How It Works

NameIn-Game DescriptionActual Function
Artifact of RebirthDescend to Petrichor V with gifts from a previous life.Start your run with either a random common item or an item of your choice depending on if you put an item into the pool that appears after defeating the False Son in the Prime Meridian.

Before diving into the steps to activate this Artifact, let’s discuss its function first. To fully utilize the ‘power’ of this Artifact, it is crucial that you’ve performed a specific action earlier in your gameplay: sacrificing an item to the Rebirth pool, which becomes accessible once you defeat the False Son in the Prime Meridian (a challenge indeed). If you have completed this step and enabled the Artifact of Rebirth, you will begin your run with the very item that was sacrificed.

After finishing this run, either by success or death during completion, the item within the Artifact of Rebirth will be forfeit. In future runs with the artifact active, only a common item at the start of the run will be provided. To replace the lost item in the Artifact of Rebirth, you must conquer the False Son once more and present another item to it as an offering.

Here’s a summary of how the Artifact functions: You have the freedom to select any item you prefer at the start of each run, even red items, which could significantly alter gameplay. Yet, understanding the mechanics of the Artifact of Rebirth can sometimes be a bit perplexing or unclear, given certain aspects. For instance:

  • Sacrificing an item to the Artifact of Rebirth ends your run, just like if you obliterated at the Obelisk at a Moment, Fractured. However, if you interact with the pool once it’ll spawn a green portal next to it. You can then use that portal to loop and continue the run if you want, though you won’t get to put an item into the Artifact of Rebirth this way.
  • Anyone who was a part of the run where you put an item into the Artifact of Rebirth will also be given that item for free at the start of the next run with the Artifact enabled.
  • Anyone who wasn’t a part of the run where you put an item into the Artifact of Rebirth will be given a random common item at the start of the next run with the Artifact enabled, or the item they last put into the Artifact of Rebirth in their own run.
  • Scrap and Captain’s Defensive Microbots can’t be put into the Artifact of Rebirth, for obvious reasons.

Artifact of Rebirth Unlock Guide

It Has a Different Unlock Method Than All the Other Artifacts

Now let’s get into how to actually unlock the Artifact of Rebirth overall, and thankfully it’s a pretty simple process. Unlike just about every other Artifact in the game, you don’t actually need to loop or use the computer in Sky Meadow or Helmith Hatchery to reach Bulwark’s Ambry and go through that whole process.

To acquire the Artifact of Rebirth, simply travel to the False Son in Prime Meridian, defeat him, and insert an item into the Artifact of Rebirth, thus concluding your journey.

Regardless of the challenge level or time taken to arrive, what truly counts is defeating the False Son and delivering the item. For those unaware of how to find the False Son, we’ve outlined the process below:

  • Either complete a Halycon Shrine when it appears (typically on Stage 1) and enter the Green Portal afterward or use Newt Altars and the Lunar Seer at the Bazaar Between time to get on any of the new stages (excluding Verdant Falls).
  • Complete the two green portal Seekers of the Storm stages, those being Reformed Altar into Treeborn Colony.
  • Take the Green Portal in Treeborn Colony into Prime Meridian.
  • Climb up to the top of Prime Meridian and fight the False Son at the peak.

After completing the task, the Artifact will become accessible to your character profile and ready for use in all future game sessions, except during Eclipse events.
