In Final Fantasy 7 Remake, Materia lets you create a strong, personalized team, and it’s crucial for tackling the harder difficulties. You attach Materia to weapons and armor to learn spells, summon allies, and gain helpful boosts. Materia also gains experience as you use it, so here’s a guide on how to level up your Materia in FF7 Remake, and do it quickly.
How to Level Up Materia in FF7 Remake
Okay, so leveling up Materia is a big part of the game. It’s basically like earning XP, but instead of I leveling up, it’s the Materia itself! The cool thing is, when I equip Materia to my weapons and armor, it actually gains AP – that’s the experience points – just by fighting. Each piece of gear has a limited number of slots for Materia, and sometimes those slots are linked together, letting me create some really powerful combinations if I plan things right.
Materia levels up as you earn AP, boosting its stats. Once a Materia reaches its maximum AP, it’s mastered. Chadley asks you to master all 12 green (magic) Materia as part of a Battle Intel Report, and he’ll reward you with the MP Absorption Materia. Linking MP Absorption with magic Materia lets you regain MP when you use magical attacks.
Not all Materia are created equal – some are more helpful and take longer to improve. To create a well-rounded and adaptable team, it’s best to prioritize leveling Materia like Revive, HP Up/MP Up, Elemental, Healing, and Magnify. These will give you the most flexibility in battle.
FF7 Remake Materia Leveling Tips: Prepare for Hard Mode as Quickly as Possible
If you’re still collecting Materia and planning a New Game+ run, you might be considering AP farming. However, it’s most effective after you’ve finished the main story. Once you’ve completed the game, you’ll earn three times more AP, and this bonus works in addition to any AP Up Materia you’re equipping.
AP Up is a Materia that increases the AP gained from any other Materia it’s linked with. You can find it in Chapter 14, immediately after leaving Aerith’s house. Initially, it appears as the Pedometer Materia. After walking 5000 steps while it’s equipped, it transforms into AP Up, and a notification will appear on screen to let you know it has upgraded.
If you didn’t get the Pedometer/AP Up Materia during your first playthrough, don’t worry! Now that you’ve finished the game, use Chapter Select to go back and find it, then head to popular AP farming spots to start using it.
Now let’s look at the best gear – weapons, Materia, and armor – for efficiently earning AP. Some gear has more slots for Materia, letting you customize it further. While you can upgrade most weapons to hold up to six Materia, this isn’t available for everything until you reach hard mode.
Okay, so if you’re looking for top-tier armor, I’ve found a couple that are seriously good. The Chain Bangle is amazing – it’s got four materia slots, and they’re all linked, which is a huge bonus! I found it in a chest during chapter 17. Then there’s the Ninja Armlet, which has three slots (two linked). You can get that one by equipping it on Yuffie once you start the INTERmission DLC. Definitely worth grabbing both!
When upgrading Materia, make sure you connect your AP Up Materia to the one you’re improving. Also, equip Materia to make battles easier and faster. Good choices include First Strike (which gives you extra ATB at the start of a fight), Magnify (which works with elemental Materia to hit multiple enemies), and Magic Up, which makes your spells stronger.
After finishing the game, unlocking Chapter Select, and gathering the weapons, armor, and Materia needed for fast AP farming, focus on the most efficient locations to maximize your gains.
- The Shinra Combat Simulator in chapter 17: Two Person Team vs High Flyers is a popular choice, but restart after the early rounds to keep things easy.
- Corneo Colosseum: You get access to this solid AP farm spot in chapters 8 and 14.
- The early sections of chapters 14 and 16.
After completing those steps, you’ll have fully upgraded Materia, which will prepare you to tackle hard mode.
