Ranked Battles in Pokemon Legends: Z-A will start in late January and run through most of February. During this time, players can earn the special Swampertite Mega Stone. Reaching Rank S in Ranked Battles will also give trainers another opportunity to obtain Mega Stones that were previously available in earlier seasons.
Just a few months after its release in October 2025, Pokemon Legends: Z-A quickly became a top-selling game for the Switch 2. In Japan, over one million physical copies of Pokemon Legends: Z-A: Nintendo Switch 2 Edition were sold, putting it alongside other popular games like Mario Kart World and Donkey Kong Bananza. While the original Switch version of Pokemon Legends: Z-A has sold over 1.5 million copies in Japan since its release, the new version made Pokemon Legends: Z-A the second best-selling Nintendo game in late December 2025, only behind Mario Kart World.

With Season 5 of Pokemon Legends: Z-A Ranked Battles ending in late January, a new season is almost here. Season 6 will start on Thursday, January 29th at 1:00 AM Eastern Time and run until Wednesday, February 18th at 8:59 PM Eastern Time. Everyone’s rank will be reset to Rank Z at the beginning of the new season, so there’s only a week left to complete any battles in Season 5. Players who reach Rank S in Season 6 will earn the Swampertite, which allows Swampert to Mega Evolve and gain a boost to its attack power. Additionally, players can earn past Mega Stones—Greninjite, Delphoxite, Chesnaughtite, Baxcalibrite, and Sceptilite—by ranking from Y to U. To participate in Ranked Battles, make sure your game is updated to version 2.0.1 and connected to the internet.
January brings more than just Season 6 for Pokémon fans. On January 21st, Pokémon Legends: Z-A received a content update (Patch 2.0.1) with several improvements. The update raised the maximum Mega Shard storage from 999 to 9,999, making it easier to collect items like Genesect plates and certain TMs. Players can also now purchase berries and feathers in larger quantities, simplifying the process of training a Pokémon’s Effort Values (EVs). Since Ranked Battles in Pokémon Legends: Z-A are competitive, players aiming for higher ranks should make sure their Pokémon have well-managed EVs. It’s worth noting that not all Pokémon are eligible to participate in Season 6 Ranked Battles.
Eligible Pokemon in Season 6 Ranked Battles
- All Pokemon included in Lumiose Pokedex Entries 001 to 232
- All Pokemon included in Hyperspace Pokedex Entries 001 to 132
- Only one of the following Legendary Pokemon may be included on a team:
- Xerneas
- Yveltal
- Zygarde
- Mewtwo
- Kyogre
- Groudon
- Rayquaza
Most of the Pokémon from the Lumiose and Hyperspace Pokédexes will be usable in Season 6 Ranked Battles for Pokémon Legends: Z-A players. However, some of the Legendary Pokémon from Pokémon Legends: Z-A will have limitations. To keep battles fair and prevent teams full of Legendary Pokémon, players can only include one of these special Pokémon on their team. This restriction applies to Pokémon like Zygarde, Mewtwo, and Kyogre. Also, players can’t use more than one Pokémon with the same Pokédex number, and all Pokémon will be automatically leveled to 50 during Ranked Battles.
Okay, so even though they’re limiting Legendary Pokemon in Pokemon Legends: Z-A, a bunch of super strong ones like Tyranitar, Metagross, and Dragonite are still allowed in the Season 6 Ranked Battles. Honestly, it sounds like we’ll still have tons of good options to build a team and climb the ranks this season, which is awesome!
