As a gamer with over two decades of Pokémon-playing under my belt, I can’t help but be impressed by the creativity and talent showcased in this fan artist’s reimagining of the Poliwag evolutionary line. In the classic Pokemon games Red and Blue (Gen 1), Poliwag was part of one of the original evolutionary chains. Yet, it played a pivotal role in introducing branching evolutions to the entire Pokemon universe, as Politoed emerged in Gen 2 as an optional final form for some Pokemon. Game Freak hasn’t made many changes or given much focus to the Poliwag line since then, but I’m offering a glimpse of what it might have developed into if its evolution had taken a slightly different path.
Artist necrovvi, a dedicated fan of Pokémon, recently unveiled their fresh interpretation of a Pokémon evolutionary line, focusing this time on Poliwag. In this version, Poliwag appears smaller with large, prominent pink spots on its cheeks, and fewer swirls on its belly, giving it a slight resemblance to Marill. Upon evolving into Poliwhirl, the swirl becomes more noticeable, retaining the pink marks on its cheeks and acquiring the hand-like structures typical of Poliwhirl. From there, Poliwhirl can either transform into Politoed or Poliwrath. The former has enlarged feet, allowing it to lean forward, while the latter becomes considerably larger and adopts a more frog-like appearance, standing upright on two legs with additional circles on its body. Lastly, Politoed’s Shiny variant is pink and blue, as are the first three evolutions in this line.
Poliwag Fans React to Redesign
Many fans of the Pokemon series have expressed their opinions on the redesigns in response to a recent post. Generally, players appear to be quite fond of these changes, particularly because they make Poliwhirl and Poliwrath more distinct from each other – something that was not as clear in the original designs. Additionally, some fans pointed out that necrovvi’s Poliwrath effectively captures the Fighting-type image with its enhanced muscular definition. Overall, it seems players appreciate that the redesigns retain the iconic swirls from the original versions while giving most of the design a fresh and unique update.
Poliwag is one of the Pokemon that has been less frequently featured in the Pokemon series throughout the years. It’s been almost a quarter of a century since the release of Pokemon Gold and Silver, and since then, this group of Pokemon hasn’t undergone significant changes. It would be exciting if they were to receive a Mega Evolution in Pokemon Legends: Z-A, but until then, fan designs like these can help keep the Pokemon family fresh in players’ minds.
