The Mega Evolution feature was a major selling point for Pokemon Legends: Z-A, and for good reason – it’s a fan-favorite mechanic in the Pokemon series. Every important trainer in the game uses Mega Evolution, sometimes with multiple Pokemon, and the game encourages players to collect all the Mega Stones through various challenges and battles. While the Mega Dimension DLC added even more Mega Evolutions, one particularly popular and significant evolution remains absent from the game.
The reveal of Mega Lucario Z in Pokemon Legends: Z-A showed that the game is changing how Mega Evolution works. Unlike previous Mega Pokemon, these Mega Z Pokemon behave differently. Here’s how:
- Mega Z Pokemon always have a base Speed stat of 151 (so far)
- Mega Z Pokemon take less time to charge their attacks
- Mega Z Pokemon’s Mega gauge depletes faster
Current Mega Z Pokémon like Mega Lucario and Mega Absol are powerful attackers, but they aren’t very durable, making them somewhat specialized choices in battle. However, information from leaks about Pokémon Legends: Z-A revealed a Mega Garchomp that wasn’t included in the game’s downloadable content. Later, data found within the game files confirmed it was actually Mega Garchomp Z, and based on what’s been discovered, it could be the strongest Mega Evolution yet.
Say Hello to Pokemon Legends: Z-A Best Mega Evolution
Garchomp in Pokemon Legends: Z-A is consistently one of the strongest Pokemon, dominating the competitive scene since launch. Even with the new DLC and powerful Legendary Pokemon added to the game, nothing quite measures up. Players can switch to other strong Pokemon if needed, but Mega Garchomp further solidifies its dominance with exceptional attack power and stats. However, Garchomp is especially vulnerable to Ice-type moves, which are super effective and deal four times the normal damage.
Mega Garchomp Z significantly weakens Garchomp’s ice weakness by changing its type to pure Dragon. It also shifts Garchomp’s attacking style from physical to special, giving players new strategies and letting it use moves like Earth Power, Draco Meteor, and Nasty Plot to reach its full potential. Data mining has revealed its stats will be:
- HP: 108
- Attack: 130
- Defense: 85
- Special Attack: 141
- Special Defense: 85
- Speed: 151
As a huge Garchomp fan, I’ve been studying its Mega Evolution, and here’s what I’ve found: the Mega Garchomp with the Z-Crystal swap trades 10 points of its already impressive Defense for a massive boost of 61 to its Special Attack, and another 49 to its Speed. It’s a really aggressive change, making it a much more potent special attacker and a lot faster!
Pokemon Legends: Z-A’s Best Moveset and Team Composition for Mega Garchomp Z
Okay, so I’ve been checking out Mega Garchomp Z in Pokemon Legends: Z-A, and honestly, it looks amazing for competitive battling. The fact that it gets rid of Garchomp’s crippling 4x weakness to Ice is huge. But it’s not just that – its movepool is what really makes it stand out. It can learn some seriously powerful Special moves, like…
- Dragon Breath (Dragon-type)
- Power Gem (Rock-type)
- Swift (Normal-type)
- Fire Blast (Fire-type)
- Hyper Beam (Normal-type)
- Earth Power (Ground-type)
- Draco Meteor (Dragon-type)
- Flamethrower (Fire-type)
- Surf (Water-type)
- Dragon Pulse (Dragon-type)
- Scorching Sands (Ground-type)
- Razor Wind (Normal-type)
- Vacuum Wave (Fighting-type)
Mega Garchomp Z can be a dominant force in ranked battles in Pokemon Legends: Z-A because it can learn Nasty Plot. This allows it to quickly boost its Special Attack and deal massive damage. A strong moveset includes Nasty Plot, Scorching Sands (for a powerful Ground-type attack before Mega Evolving), Draco Meteor (a devastating Dragon-type attack), and a move like Fire Blast, Flamethrower, or Power Gem to effectively counter Ice-type Pokemon.
While Mega Garchomp Z struggles a bit against Fairy-type Pokémon like Xerneas, you can easily switch it out for a different Pokémon. Luckily, Mega Magearna from Pokémon Legends: Z-A works really well alongside Garchomp, and even regular Magearna is a great choice due to its Fairy/Steel typing. Your third teammate can be pretty much anything, but Rotom-Fan offers strong Thunderbolts with Charge or Nasty Plot and support with screens, while Mr. Rime provides screens and useful Ice-type attacks to cover Ground-types and other Garchomps.
Although Mega Garchomp Z isn’t currently available in the game, data discovered within the game files suggests it was planned for an event. The most probable scenario is that it will be given to all players as a free gift on Pokémon Day – February 27, 2026 – and you won’t need to own any DLC to receive it.
