Chao Fans Should Keep an Eye Out For the Upcoming Sonic Animated Series

As a long-time fan of the Sonic the Hedgehog series, I am beyond excited about the upcoming releases this year! The anticipation is palpable with Sonic X Shadow Generations, Sonic the Hedgehog 3 in theaters, and now the announcement of Chao Tales. It’s been a while since we’ve seen much love for those adorable little critters, and I can hardly contain my excitement!

It appears that the exciting conclusion of the Sonic the Hedgehog series is approaching this year, with not just the upcoming release of Sonic X Shadow Generations and the theater premiere of Sonic the Hedgehog 3 in December, but also some fresh, entertaining surprises revealed during the latest Sonic Central. Although many of the disclosed details were previously known to fans, a new animated shorts series was unveiled – it’s called Chao Tales, a delight for those who continue to cherish the little creatures despite their limited appearances in recent Sonic stories.

Beyond a brief preview, not much is disclosed about the Chao Tales, but enthusiasts have a summary to work with. The series intends to track Sonic’s visits to a Chao Garden throughout a year. Alongside Sonic, a recognizable small Chao, known as Shadow the Hedgehog’s special character, appears to be the only other character thus far. This suggests that it might have a minor role, either causing trouble for Sonic or becoming his companion.

Chao Tales’ View Counts Could Let Sonic Team Know How Badly Fans Want Chao Gardens Back

The Chao have been no strangers to the animated shorts that the Sonic franchise has produced over time, with them featuring as a racing team in Team Sonic Racing: Overdrive and as native inhabitants of Angel Island in Sonic Frontiers Prologue: Divergence. However, it’s likely that the popularity of the short Chao in Space, which garnered 2.5 million views on YouTube alone during the holiday season of 2019, has led to the expansion of Chao Tales into a multi-short series. This popular short features Sonic’s funny attempts to help a sleepwalking Chao who dreams of being in a Star Wars parody battle.

Sonic Team and the Search for Support of the Chao

One significant factor contributing to the popularity of “Chao in Space” is the widespread love for the Chao characters, particularly among longtime fans of the series. Ever since they ceased being a recurring element in primary games, fans have been clamoring for the return of the Chao Garden mechanic from “Sonic Adventure 1” and “2”, expressing their desire in every possible platform. However, Sonic Team’s usual response has been that the feature might make a comeback if there’s enough fan support.

After numerous attempts to demonstrate Sonic Team the strong demand for this feature, it seems that if each individual episode of Chao Tales gains a substantial number of views, fans could finally convey their message more directly to Sonic Team. If the short series performs almost as successfully as Sonic X Shadow Generations: Dark Beginnings, which has garnered over 734,000 views in its first 24 hours, then the viewership of the Chao Garden will be undeniable to everyone involved.

With frequently asked questions comes frequently given answers, however, and the support for the Chao Gardens isn’t something that hasn’t been stated by fans before. Despite the constant outcry for the feature’s return, Sonic Team has yet to revisit the Chao Garden concept in a way that feels like any of the support the studio’s asked for has fallen on deaf ears. Still, if fans want to truly let the developers know just how much the critters and their hideaway are desired, then making Chao Tales a popular series of Sonic shorts by a fair margin will be a great way to do so.
