As I watched Naruto, Sasuke Uchiha always seemed to be a central figure, so it’s no surprise the creator, Kishimoto, really focused on developing his powers. Sasuke became incredibly strong, able to defeat a lot of powerful opponents. But even with all his abilities, there were times when he was pushed to his absolute limit and nearly lost.
When things got really dangerous, Kishimoto often used a convenient plot device – essentially protecting Sasuke from truly losing. While Sasuke winning was good for the story, many fans wonder what would have happened if he’d actually been defeated.
This post contains spoilers for Naruto.
Deidara
Affiliation: Akatsuki
Image via Pierrot. - The fight should have ended in a draw at least
Deidara was the youngest member of the Akatsuki, recruited for his incredible skill with explosives. Though he initially resisted joining, he was forced to after being defeated by Itachi. As part of the Akatsuki, Deidara honed his abilities, becoming even more proficient with his explosive clay and other elemental techniques.
I watched the fight between Deidara and Sasuke in Naruto Shippuden, and it was intense. Sasuke really had the upper hand at first, skillfully using his Sharingan to outsmart Deidara. But Deidara was tough – he didn’t give up easily. He created these tiny clay creatures and sent them inside Sasuke, which seemed like it should have been enough to win. Surprisingly, Sasuke managed to fight them off. Then, desperate, Deidara unleashed C3, a massive attack that could destroy a huge area. Honestly, it looked like Sasuke was a goner, but the author, Kishimoto, intervened and saved him.
Danzo
Affiliation: Hidden Leaf Village
- Sasuke should have been sealed away
After Tsunade was weakened during the attack by Pain, Danzo declared himself Hokage. He then traveled to the Land of Iron for a meeting with the leaders of the other villages, unaware that Sasuke was following him with the intention of eliminating him.
After being postponed multiple times, Sasuke and Danzo finally clashed. Danzo was too confident, relying on his Izanagi ability to save him, but Sasuke proved to be the more cunning fighter, putting Danzo in a dangerous spot. Realizing he was losing, Danzo attempted to trap Sasuke using a powerful seal. Luckily, Obito intervened with his Kamui ability, rescuing Sasuke and completely ruining Danzo’s plan. Although Sasuke was winning, the fight likely would have ended in a stalemate without Obito’s help.
Itachi Uchiha
Affiliation: Akatsuki
- Itachi let Sasuke win
Itachi Uchiha is a hugely popular character in the Naruto series. From the moment he appeared, fans loved him, but their admiration grew even stronger when his difficult past was revealed. As the story unfolded, it became clear that Itachi and his brother Sasuke were destined for a confrontation.
The fight between Itachi and Sasuke started, but Itachi purposely held back, not wanting to harm his brother. Sasuke didn’t realize Itachi wasn’t fighting with full strength. Ultimately, Sasuke won, but his victory was revealed to be meaningless when Obito explained that Itachi had never intended to kill him. It became clear that Sasuke shouldn’t have been declared the winner.
Killer B
Affiliation: Hidden Cloud Village
Image via Pierrot. - Killer B was holding back against Sasuke
Killer B was the adopted brother of Lightning A and hosted the powerful Eight-Tails inside him. He dedicated himself to intense training from a young age, focusing on improving his physical strength and learning to control the Eight-Tails’ power. By successfully bonding with the beast, Killer B gained a massive amount of chakra and could even transform into the Eight-Tails itself, greatly increasing his attack power.
As the story progressed, Sasuke became a member of the Akatsuki and was assigned the mission of capturing Killer B. True to his nature, Sasuke was overconfident and jumped into battle, quickly realizing he’d underestimated his opponent. Killer B had the upper hand and would have defeated Sasuke if the rest of Sasuke’s team, Taka, hadn’t intervened. Fortunately for Sasuke, Killer B also had his own reasons for wanting to escape unnoticed, which saved him from a more serious outcome.
Kabuto Yakushi
Affiliation: Hidden Leaf
- Itachi saved Sasuke from humiliation
After Orochimaru died, Kabuto was consumed by a desire to follow in his footsteps. He studied Orochimaru’s research, hoping to master his techniques, and even journeyed to the Ryuchi Cave to learn the powerful Snake Sage Mode. Once he mastered this technique, Kabuto became even stronger than Orochimaru, evolving into a formidable threat. His ambition led him to join forces with Obito and help initiate the Fourth Great Ninja War.
During the war, Itachi and Sasuke tried to defeat Kabuto, who was controlling all the reanimated ninja. However, the battle was overwhelmingly in Kabuto’s favor, and the Uchiha brothers were struggling. Itachi ultimately had to use a powerful technique called Izanami, sacrificing himself in the process, to stop Kabuto. Without his sacrifice, they likely would have lost.
