YouTube Shorts Being Extended to 3 Minutes This Month

As a seasoned content creator with over a decade of experience under my belt, I must say that the recent announcement by YouTube regarding the extension of YouTube Shorts duration from 60 seconds to 180 seconds is both exciting and puzzling.

Starting October 15th, YouTube is extending the length limit for Shorts from 60 seconds to 3 minutes. This change might seem counterintuitive, but it’s exciting news for content creators as they now have more time to share their ideas and stories.

According to what the platform’s team announced, they mentioned that this feature has been frequently asked for by creators and will offer users greater freedom to express their narratives.

Shorts Getting Long

It appears that TikTok’s growth and evolution might be entering a new phase, as now users can post videos lasting up to an hour. This seems unusual given that most users today prefer brief, engaging, and snappy content.

Of course, having longer videos means increased ad revenue and earning potential for content creators, so there’s a silver lining to it!

Previously, videos on YouTube Shorts were capped at 60 seconds, but starting from October 15, this restriction will be lifted, allowing for videos of up to 3 minutes (or 180 seconds). As stated in their announcement:

Beginning October 15th, you’ll have the ability to post longer shorts, up to a maximum of 3 minutes! This is a feature that creators have been asking for, so we’re thrilled to offer you more room to share your stories. Please note that this change only affects videos with square or taller aspect ratios and does not impact any videos uploaded prior to October 15th. In the upcoming months, we’ll also be enhancing our recommendations for longer shorts.

Content makers seeking new paths to expand their creative ventures will find this shift appealing. It presents another opportunity for them to earn some income by publishing content, with differences in monetization between traditional YouTube videos and YouTube Shorts. Yet, both can be profitable even for those just starting out.
