Power Rangers is a hugely popular action series, and it’s been a fan favorite since it first aired in the early 1990s. Among all the Rangers, Tommy Oliver stands out as the most iconic. He began as a villain on the original Mighty Morphin Power Rangers team, but quickly became one of their strongest allies and a brave leader.
Tommy Oliver, the Power Ranger who’s served the longest, has worn many different colors and held various roles over the years. While he’s achieved some incredible things, some of his Ranger forms are more popular with fans than others – and some are definitely more powerful than others.
5. Tommy Passes the Torch As the Red Turbo Ranger
T.J. More Than Proved He Deserves the Title
Tommy Oliver’s run as the Red Turbo Ranger was one of his final roles as a Red Ranger. The Turbo Rangers’ designs and powers are fondly remembered by many fans, and they represent a special period in the show’s history. Midway through Power Rangers Turbo, Oliver and other veteran Rangers decide it’s time to step down and let a new team take over.
Okay, so Tommy finally found someone to pass the Red Turbo Ranger torch to, and honestly, T.J. Johnson really earns it. Tommy was an amazing leader, no doubt, but T.J. totally makes the role his own. With all the different Ranger colors Tommy’s been, it just wouldn’t feel right calling him the Red Turbo Ranger, you know? T.J. stepped up and truly became that Ranger.
I love Oliver’s Turbo powers, they’re really cool! But honestly, his Red Turbo form isn’t what I think of when I picture the best Power Ranger transformations. It looks good and works well, but it just doesn’t have the same feeling as his other forms, and it doesn’t bring back the same memories. With Power Rangers, it’s not just about how strong a form is – it’s about what it means. Tommy being the Red Turbo Ranger was awesome, but it wasn’t his most memorable time as a Ranger, in my opinion.
4. The White Ranger Didn’t Have the Same Flair as His Original Evil Counterpart
The White Ranger’s Design Is Understandably Blander Than His Counterparts
When Tommy Oliver’s Green Ranger powers started failing because he was no longer evil, he became the White Ranger. Zordon provided him with a new suit and appointed him as the Rangers’ new leader after Jason Lee Scott stepped down. While the White Ranger suit is said to be stronger, it doesn’t have the same sentimental value as his original Green Ranger form.
Oliver’s White Ranger look doesn’t resonate with fans as much as his earlier transformation. While the white tiger theme is cool, it doesn’t have the same visual impact as his original green dragon design.
Despite some concerns, Tommy excelled as the team leader and continued in that role for several future seasons. A major problem with his second Power Rangers outfit was the color scheme. Power Rangers is known for its vibrant and colorful visuals, with Rangers frequently highlighted by bright displays of their signature colors. A White Ranger didn’t quite have the same visual impact, which is why Oliver often returned as the Green Ranger instead.
3. The Black Dino Ranger Brought Tommy Out of Retirement
Tommy Takes on a Mentor Role in Power Rangers Dino Thunder
The Black Dino Ranger represents a significant turning point for Tommy Oliver. It’s when he shifts from being a Power Ranger himself to a mentor, becoming one of the few Rangers to take on that role in the series. Alongside his Brachiosaurus Zord, he’s always there to support the team, but he also allows them to learn from their own errors. Importantly, Dino Thunder was the last time Oliver consistently worked as part of a Ranger team.
Tommy’s Black Ranger costume shares similarities with his past looks, featuring prominent gold shoulder pads and a unique design compared to the other rangers. Many fans consider it the best design in Dino Thunder, and it stands out until the other rangers gain more powerful abilities. The show successfully blends fresh storylines with elements that longtime fans will appreciate.
As a huge Power Rangers fan, I always thought Oliver absolutely nailed his role as the “Teacher Ranger” in Dino Thunder. It really set the stage for how they brought back other classic Rangers later on. While he wasn’t the first mentor figure, Tommy is probably the most beloved – honestly, it’s tough to imagine anyone surpassing him! But seriously, seeing Tommy back in Dino Thunder made me realize they could have found ways to keep more of the original Rangers involved throughout the series if they’d wanted to.
2. Tommy Oliver’s First Appearance as the Green Ranger is Utterly Iconic
The Green Ranger Took on the Entire Original Team at Once
Tommy Oliver first became famous as the Green Ranger in Power Rangers, and he’s still best known for that role today. Initially, he started as a bit of a bad guy, constantly challenging the Power Rangers with his impressive fighting skills and the unique Dragon Dagger. Eventually, he broke free from the evil Rita Repulsa’s control and became a valuable ally.
After switching back to the side of good, Tommy continues to be a powerful ally to the Rangers. His Dragon Zord is so strong it can combine with the original Megazord, creating an even more formidable weapon. Had Tommy stayed evil, he almost certainly would have defeated the original team.
Tommy Oliver’s Green Ranger kicked off the tradition of introducing a sixth Power Ranger, and continues to be the model for that role. No other sixth Ranger has had quite the same impact or lasting popularity. Even after almost thirty years, the Green Ranger remains a favorite among fans.
1. Tommy Leads the Original Rangers as the Red Zeo Ranger
The Red Zeo Ranger Would Lead the Team For Several Years
As a huge Power Rangers fan, I always loved Tommy Oliver’s journey. After being the White Ranger, it was so satisfying to see him finally become the Red Ranger in Power Rangers Zeo! He truly earned that leadership role, and his time leading the team is legendary. It was cool seeing him guide a mix of familiar and new Rangers as they faced villains the Power Rangers universe hadn’t dealt with before.
The Zeo Crystals are incredibly powerful artifacts in the world of Power Rangers, making the Zeo Rangers one of the strongest teams ever. These magical morphers get stronger the more they’re used, potentially meaning Tommy Oliver could have become unbeatable if he’d continued using his Zeo powers, even against the forces in Dino Thunder. While each new Ranger team is usually more powerful than the last, that doesn’t appear to be true when comparing Power Rangers Zeo and Power Rangers Turbo.
While not always the most-loved season, Zeo Designs were incredibly important, setting the stage for all future Power Rangers looks. The Zeo Rangers were the first to wear full helmets with the now-famous black visors, a style that would become a series staple. Many fans agree that Tommy Oliver’s time as the Zeo Red Ranger was his strongest performance, and the season represents a truly iconic era and the height of his Power Rangers career.
