Nintendo has announced a new Direct presentation for January 29th, dedicated entirely to the game Tomodachi Life: Living the Dream. This is the second Nintendo Direct of 2026; the first, last Sunday, focused on the Super Mario Galaxy Movie. That presentation revealed a new release date for the animated sequel and offered fans a first glimpse of Illumination’s take on Yoshi.
First released in Japan in 2009, Tomodachi Collection for the Nintendo DS lets players create and manage the lives of their Mii characters. A sequel, Tomodachi Life, came to the Nintendo 3DS in 2013 and to North America a year later. While the US version received mixed reviews initially (scoring a 74 on OpenCritic with 49% of critics recommending it), Tomodachi Life has gained a dedicated fan base in recent years, largely due to funny, shareable videos of its Miis singing in a unique text-to-speech style.
Nintendo Announces Tomodachi Life: Living the Dream Direct for January 29
- Airing January 29 at 6am PT / 9am ET
It’s been ten years since the original Tomodachi Life, and now Nintendo has announced a sequel! The new game, Tomodachi Life: Living the Dream, is getting its own dedicated Nintendo Direct presentation on January 29th. Nintendo says the presentation will be around 20 minutes long. While some single-game Directs can vary in length – some, like those for Mario Kart World and Donkey Kong Bananza, were about 17 minutes, while Kirby Air Riders had two presentations lasting nearly an hour each – 20 minutes should be plenty of time to show off everything Tomodachi Life: Living the Dream has to offer.
After being announced in March 2025, Tomodachi Life: Living the Dream got another trailer showing off some of the new things players can expect. The trailer highlighted expanded customization options and more complex ways for characters to interact. A detailed look at gameplay, including the game’s social features and minigames, is planned for a Direct presentation on January 29th.
The trailer for Tomodachi Life: Living the Dream revealed a release window of Spring 2026, meaning the game is expected between March and May. We’ll likely learn the specific release date during the next Nintendo Direct presentation. Pre-orders might also open after the Direct on January 29th, though Nintendo may wait a bit longer if the game isn’t launching until later in the spring.
When’s The Next Big Nintendo Direct?
Many people are enjoying Tomodachi Life: Living the Dream, but a lot of Nintendo fans are eagerly awaiting the next Nintendo Direct presentation. This is where Nintendo will likely announce upcoming games for the Switch and Switch 2. A leak from Twitter user @BeeFun on January 10th suggests a general Nintendo Direct will happen on February 10th, and it might include a brand new 3D Super Mario game. While rumors should always be viewed with skepticism, Nintendo often holds a Direct presentation in early February, so there’s a good chance this leak could be accurate.
