Trump’s Strategy To Win Crypto Votes
As a researcher looking back at 2011, I played witness to the birth of Silk Road, an online marketplace that enabled the clandestine trading of illicit goods and services using Bitcoin (BTC). Operating for two years, this platform was reportedly associated with over $200 million worth of illegal transactions by the United States Department of Justice (DOJ).
2013 saw the arrest and subsequent conviction of Ross Ulbricht on various charges, including narcotics trafficking, conspiring to commit cybercrimes, and money laundering. He is now serving a dual life sentence with no chance of parole, having already spent 12 years behind bars in federal prison.
As a researcher, I’ve been examining the case of an individual named Ulbricht, who was accused by prosecutors of masterminding five murder attempts to safeguard his business interests. However, no concrete evidence has emerged indicating that these murders actually occurred. Currently, he is imprisoned in a federal correctional institution in Tucson, Arizona, and has made two unsuccessful appeals against his sentence.
Advocating for Ulbricht’s freedom could provide Trump with a chance to establish ties with the cryptocurrency community, as they view Ulbricht as embodying the initial ideals of Bitcoin.
A significant number of individuals within the digital currency sector, even some early pioneers of Bitcoin, have consistently supported Ulbricht’s plight. They see his situation as emblematic of how Bitcoin could function as an “uncensorable financial network.
Reflections From Prison Amid Trump’s Promises
According to Bloomberg, Trump’s statement about pardoning Ulbricht is part of a larger plan to win over supporters in the crypto community and those deeply invested in the movement. At the Libertarian Party convention in May, Trump said, “If you elect me on day one, I will grant clemency to Ross Ulbricht. He has already served 11 years; it’s time for him to return home.
Despite being behind bars, Ulbricht continues to engage with the external world via letters and online posts. He remains a staunch supporter of Bitcoin, acknowledging the cryptocurrency community for their unwavering backing of his case.
According to Ulbricht, the original purpose of Silk Road was to ensure user privacy and promote financial freedom using Bitcoin, despite recognizing that illicit activities occurred on the site. In an April blog post, Ulbricht himself admitted this.
In the time since my imprisonment, there has been a significant surge in conversations surrounding Bitcoin. Previously incarcerated, I found Bitcoin to serve as a tool for promoting privacy and individual freedom. Initially, when it came to the listing of illicit substances, I held the view that such actions were acceptable, given my belief that drugs should be decriminalized.
Apart from upholding the Ulbricht Pledge, Trump also made significant pledges to the Bitcoin community that stand out. Among these are plans to establish a strategic Bitcoin reserve for the United States and a promise to dismiss Gary Gensler, the current head of the Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC).
It appears that the latest national poll update by CNN indicates that Donald Trump, who was previously a president, has emerged as the apparent front-runner in the upcoming presidential election, which is scheduled to take place within approximately two months. The odds of Donald Trump winning against Vice President Kamala Harris are estimated to be more than 68%.
