Zelda: Echoes of Wisdom - Cotton Candy Hunt Quest Walkthrough

As an experienced adventurer who has traversed through countless dungeons and faced numerous challenges, I must say that the Cotton Candy Hunt Quest was indeed quite the intriguing journey! The fight against Smog was no walk in the park, but with the right strategies and a bit of patience, we managed to defeat him not once, but twice!

In the game known as “The Legend of Zelda: Echoes of Wisdom“, additional missions, or side quests, lead Zelda to locations she might not normally visit, or areas that remain inaccessible until specific conditions are met. One such example is the two-part quest chain titled “Cotton Candy Hunt” in “Echoes of Wisdom“. This side mission directs players towards an ancient ruin nestled in the southern part of Faron Wetlands, with the aim of uncovering the origin of a familiar sound.

This ruin is blocked until you start the Cotton Candy Hunt quest, but once inside, you will quickly discover a puzzle-laden maze leading to a familiar boss from an earlier side quest: Smog . This guide explains how to start this quest, how to get through the Hidden Ruin dungeon, and how to beat Smog in his second appearance – though it has the same boss mechanics, you’ll have to fight Smog from a new perspective this time.

Zelda: Echoes of Wisdom - Cotton Candy Hunt Quest Walkthrough

To start the Cotton Candy Hunt quest in Echoes of Wisdom, there are two prerequisites.

  • First, you must have completed the quest Let’s Play A Game, which begins in the Eastern Temple to the west of Seesyde Village.
  • Second, you must have completed the first four dungeons of the game to unlock the second half of the Rifts, then complete the Faron Temple dungeon.

After securing the Faron Rift, the native Deku Scrubs are on a mission to find a means to reacquire their cherished Cotton Candy once more. It seems that one has stumbled upon a creature composed entirely of Cotton Candy in its vicinity.

Speak with the Deku Scrub located on the northeastern side of Scrubton, easily identifiable by the two green tufts on its head. You are tasked to locate the drifting Candy Floss mentioned by him, interestingly enough, it’s Smog – the boss cloud you encountered during the Let’s Play A Game quest, found nearby the Sweet Spot itself.

It’s Not Cotton Candy – It’s A Recurring Boss

Navigate along the provided map to locate a colossal Deku Scrub statue adorned with torches. Defeat the nearby Drippitune to halt the rain, then illuminate these torches to uncover an underground entrance hidden below the statue, leading to the concealed Ruins beneath.

Step into the doorway to access the initial challenge room. Similarly to the Eastern Temple, this labyrinth contains puzzles where Zelda must fill a yellow container with Spark elements.

If you haven’t mastered the Spark Echo at the Eastern Temple, consider employing a Bomb or a Bombflower to demolish one and seize its Echo instead. This item is indispensable in this labyrinth since it allows you to bypass most of the puzzle solutions by summoning Sparks directly into the yellow containers.

If you prefer to avoid using the cheesy solution for this puzzle, you can manipulate the movement of the Sparks in the room by creating copies of Crates and Boulders, which will then move through the yellow box as intended.

In the room to your right, which opens following the solution of the puzzle, step inside to find another puzzle chamber containing Sparks at a lower level, surrounded by cobwebs. Utilize a Fire-producing Echo (similar to Ignizol slime’s Echo) to ignite the spider webs and vanquish the adversaries in the room, then focus on the upper right corner of the area.

In this particular space, you’ll find a yellow container that needs three Sparks to be activated. You can achieve this either by employing your Spark Echoes or by redirecting the Sparks presently in the room. Fulfill the yellow container to gain access to the room lying to the north.

In this location, press the yellow box if you’ve activated Tri’s Long Distance Summon skill, which becomes available after reaching Level 2. To use it effectively, press and hold Y to build up a Spark Echo, then launch it at a 45-degree angle towards the yellow box situated on the opposite side of the chain to clear the path ahead.

In this part of the game, you’ll encounter a side-scrolling underground area filled with numerous Strandtula enemies and some Sparks in an underwater segment. Move towards the right side of the room, and utilize one of your own Strandtulas to climb up the right-hand wall. After that, proceed to the underwater section.

You can climb your way to the upper area, where the Treasure Chest is located, by employing a Strandtula or Platboom for support. Once there, you’ll either need to defeat the moving Sparks that populate the platform or carefully jump over them. Inside the chest, you’ll find a tidy sum of 20 Rupees.

You can transfer the current Spark into the yellow container by utilizing the Bind ability, however, you cannot conjure Sparks directly onto the container due to the presence of a climbing wall in the backdrop. Instead, summon a Spark on the ground located on the left side, promptly bind with it, then walk over the crates to deposit it inside the yellow box. This maneuver requires two steps to create a path towards advancement.

Stepping into the chamber on the right, I brace myself for another clash with the Smog boss – and this round promises a fresh twist! Instead of the usual top-down view, we’re now in a side-scrolling battlefield. This shift not only amps up the visual appeal but also alters the strategies players can employ to outmaneuver the boss during its pauses for breath.

Cotton Candy Quest Boss: Smog, Again!

Indeed, Smog returns once again in the Hidden Ruin, and just like before using potions or smoothies that grant Electricity Proof is a great idea for this fight. After the boss tells Zelda he couldn’t resist a rematch, the fight will start as Smog clings to the environmental platforms and shoots lightning bolts her way.

Initially, activate Swordfighter Form with your Electricity Resistance turned on. You can either strike at Smog’s physical form or fire arrows in its direction. After a few attacks, it will likely move to its intermission phase and divide into three smaller clouds that scatter across the room.

Just as earlier, your task is to manipulate each cloud’s trajectory by strategically positioning Echoes that cause them to collide. Each cloud will adhere to the nearest surface and travel along it while firing lightning bolts at Zelda. You are unable to attach yourself to these clouds; instead, you can only arrange objects in their path to influence their direction.

Eventually, every cloud will merge with others to become Smog once more. When the boss has been completely reassembled, activate the Swordfighter Form, either consume another Electricity Resistant smoothie or potion, and continue dealing damage until it enters a second pause.

This time, your task is to bring together five distinct clusters of clouds over the arena. Stick to the same approach and redirect each cluster so that they all come into contact with one another, leading to the final stage.

After performing this mechanism twice, smog won’t disperse again. Summon a powerful Echo, similar to a Level 3 Darknut Echo, activate your Swordfighter Form, and attack relentlessly. With persistence, the boss will concede defeat for a second time.

Cotton Candy Hunt Quest Rewards

After conquering Smog for the second round, the boss will once more shower me with a stack of Rupees and a precious Heart Piece as reward, making this quest and its companion game totally worth the detour since I’m now two steps closer to filling a new Container with four Heart Pieces.

Instead, you’ll receive as a prize for informing the Scrub about the incident, the desirable trinket known as the “Curious Relic”.

In the game “Echoes of Wisdom”, The Curious Relic accessory stands out among other accessories due to its exceptional ability to drastically lower the damage received when used. It takes the place of the Ancient Relic in your inventory, a reward from “Let’s Play A Game”. However, its effect is significantly stronger, making it a valuable replacement you won’t regret using.
