However, the Xenoblade Chronicles series has become one of the genre’s most beloved in recent years, largely thanks to a particularly impactful plot twist in the first game.

The living creatures on the Bionis are constantly at war with the mechanical beings from the Mechonis, a conflict that has lasted for centuries. Players experience the story through Shulk, a young engineer from Colony 9, and his companions, including his friends Reyn and Fiora, as well as Fiora’s heroic older brother, Dunban.

The story centers around Shulk and his ability to see brief glimpses of the future thanks to a special sword called the Monado, particularly when he’s threatened. After their home, Colony 9, is attacked by machines called Mechon, Shulk and his friends journey to Mechonis, the source of the Mechon, uncovering shocking truths about their world. But the most impactful twist isn’t about the world itself – it’s a deeply personal revelation that resonates emotionally with players.

The Emotional Stakes Are Set for Xenoblade Chronicles’ Story Early

The beginning of Xenoblade Chronicles starts slowly, showing Shulk’s normal life in Colony 9 – exploring caves with his friend Reyn and enjoying time with Fiora. This peace is shattered when the colony is attacked by an army of Mechon, led by a unique and frightening enemy called Metal Face. The pivotal moment arrives when Metal Face mortally wounds Fiora, fueling Shulk’s anger and setting him on a journey for vengeance.

Many Japanese role-playing games, like Final Fantasy and Persona, aren’t afraid to kill off important characters to create drama. However, Xenoblade Chronicles‘ decision to kill Fiora so early in the game is particularly effective. This event fuels an emotionally powerful story and a major reveal that few other games have managed to achieve. Even when the story’s pace slows down, the desire to avenge Fiora keeps players invested until the truth is finally revealed.

Xenoblade Chronicles Major Plot Twist Flips These Emotional Stakes on Their Head

While traveling to Mechonis, Shulk and his companions are forced to go through Prison Island. There, they discover Zanza, a massive being from Bionis, who is being held captive. Zanza helps Shulk learn how to fully utilize the Monado’s power. However, their encounter is interrupted by Metal Face, who returns with a new, silver-colored Mechon and attacks the group. During the fight, the Mechon’s armor is damaged, revealing that Fiora is piloting it.

This revelation dramatically shifts how both the player and Shulk see the world, revealing that the machines they thought were automated are actually controlled by living people. Adding to this, Fiora is discovered to be alive, bringing a huge wave of relief to Shulk and his team, something they’ve been hoping for since the start of the game. After destroying the Mechon Factory at Galahad Fortress and finally defeating Metal Face, Fiora is rescued and rejoins the group, though she now has a mechanical body.

Players of Xenoblade Chronicles often think the story is ending at this point, because the main problem has been solved. But this is actually just the middle of the game, and a bigger danger appears once Shulk and Fiora find each other again.

Xenoblade Chronicles Almost Didn’t Release in North America

Though Xenoblade Chronicles is now celebrated for its powerful story and emotional impact, it almost never came to North America. The game first released in Japan and Europe in 2010 and 2011, but it wasn’t until 2012, thanks to a dedicated fan campaign called Operation Rainfall, that Nintendo agreed to bring it to North American shores along with Pandora’s Tower and The Last Story. Without Operation Rainfall, Xenoblade Chronicles likely wouldn’t be as famous today, and many fans would have missed out on a truly great JRPG story.

When Xenoblade Chronicles first came out, it was only available at GameStop, which made it hard to find even after its North American release.
