The Hokage is the title given to the leader of the Hidden Leaf Village. These individuals are the most powerful and respected in the village – even feared by enemies. They are among the greatest ninja in the world, and their immense power makes other nations wary. Throughout the story, seven Hokage have served, each possessing extraordinary abilities.

Very few people have ever defeated these legendary figures. Those who have accomplished this are remembered as heroes throughout history. Here’s a look at the incredibly rare individuals who have defeated a Hokage in direct combat.

Madara Uchiha

Hokage Defeated: Tobirama, Tsunade

Madara Uchiha led the Uchiha Clan and was a major rival to Hashirama Senju. He was incredibly powerful, potentially even stronger than the fully powered Tailed Beasts. He became so feared that other villages united just to oppose him and his clan.

I couldn’t believe how easily Madara defeated the Five Kage. He was just an incredibly skilled shinobi – he took down two Hokage with little effort. I remember Tsunade putting up a good fight, but Madara was clearly in a different league. Later, during the war, Tobirama even tried to challenge him, but Madara dispatched him quickly. It was a display of power I won’t soon forget.

Kinkaku and Ginkaku were notorious troublemakers, feared by everyone in and around their village. They were incredibly strong and skilled ninja who had battled many powerful foes, including the Nine-Tails. During a fight with Kurama (the Nine-Tails), they were actually swallowed whole! Surprisingly, they survived by consuming Kurama’s flesh, which gave them some of his power – huge reserves of chakra and abilities similar to those of a Jinchuriki (a human host for a tailed beast). This made them even more formidable, allowing them to fight against the Raikage and the Hokage. They even defeated Tobirama, the then-current Hokage, though the details of that battle are unclear – all that’s known for sure is that Tobirama was killed.

Hokage Defeated: Hiruzen

Orochimaru first appeared in Naruto as a terrifying ninja, even Kakashi feared him. He was the biggest threat Konoha had faced up to that point, and only his former teacher, Hiruzen, could stop him. Orochimaru recognized Hiruzen’s immense power, even in his old age, surpassing that of other village leaders. He used a forbidden technique called Edo Tensei to summon the First and Second Hokage to battle Hiruzen. It was a difficult fight, but Hiruzen ultimately won. However, the victory came at a steep price – Orochimaru’s hands were crippled by the Reaper Death Seal.

Hokage Defeated: Danzo Shimura

Sasuke was heartbroken to discover the truth about Itachi’s selfless sacrifice – how Itachi had suffered and died to protect him and their village. Driven by this revelation, Sasuke vowed revenge against the Hidden Leaf Village and those responsible for Itachi’s pain. He saw Danzo as the main culprit, and got his chance to confront him during the Five Kage Summit. There, Sasuke battled each of the Kage, eventually facing Danzo in a fierce and strategic fight. Sasuke ultimately won, defeating Danzo in a violent clash.

Man, Hiruzen, the Third Hokage, was a true hero! He dedicated his life to protecting the village, and he wasn’t going to go down without a serious fight. When Orochimaru attacked, Hiruzen stepped up to face him, and their battle was incredible. Orochimaru was totally prepared though, summoning two other Hokage to help him, which made things unbelievably difficult. But Hiruzen fought with everything he had, giving it his all! Even though he was older and facing three opponents, he held his own. Ultimately, he knew his time was limited, so he made the ultimate sacrifice and used the Reaper Death Seal. He sealed away Hashirama and Tobirama, effectively defeating them, but sadly, it cost him his life. It was an amazing, yet heartbreaking, display of strength and dedication.
