I’ve been checking out Highguard, this new free-to-play raid shooter where you’re a mounted Warden trying to smash into enemy bases while defending your own. It’s got a cool mix of gunplay and special abilities, and I’ve been wondering if it’s better to play with a controller or keyboard and mouse. So, I’m breaking down the pros and cons of each to help you decide what’s best for you in Highguard.

Using A Controller In Highguard

Look, for me, controllers are all about comfort. I can just chill back and enjoy the game, which is awesome. But when I’m really trying to compete against other players, I usually end up sitting up straight anyway, focused on what’s happening. So while a controller feels better, it doesn’t always give me an edge when it’s time to get serious.

Using a controller for aiming isn’t quite as accurate or quick as using a mouse, and this also applies when you’re purchasing items and managing your inventory in Highguard. Because you’ll be buying things throughout the game, often while enemies are nearby, a mouse is the better choice for speed and efficiency.

One small issue with the controller is that it’s simple to unintentionally jump onto your mount by quickly pressing the A or Cross button. You then need to use a different button to get off.

Look, if you’re like me and grew up playing shooters with a controller, then sticking with it is totally fine! You’ll probably actually do better with what you’re comfortable with, and the game fully supports controllers, so no worries at all.

Using A Keyboard & Mouse In Highguard

For competitive first-person shooter (FPS) games, a mouse and keyboard are usually the best choice. A mouse allows for more accurate and faster shooting compared to a controller’s joysticks. This holds true in Highguard as well – even with special abilities, skillful aiming remains crucial for success in most situations.

Using a mouse isn’t just helpful for aiming guns; many abilities in the game also require precise targeting. A keyboard offers more convenient controls for these abilities and actions, like throwing grenades, compared to a controller. Controllers often have limited buttons, forcing important functions like grenade throwing to be assigned to less accessible locations like the D-pad.

A mouse allows for quicker navigation of in-game menus, like purchasing items and selecting a respawn point. Players can also switch between weapons using either number keys or the mouse scroll wheel, providing more flexibility than a controller offers.

Generally, using a mouse and keyboard is better for most situations, especially for more advanced players. But both control schemes work well, and it really comes down to what each player prefers.
