No game has truly captured the feeling of everyday life, although many have attempted it. Usually, games stumble into realistic routines and simple moments by chance, or use them as a calming element within a larger, more focused story. This creates a sense of familiarity that’s surprisingly engaging – it’s not boring, and it allows you to really connect with the game, its characters, and what’s happening.
This collection offers a diverse range of gaming experiences, from realistic simulations to open-ended sandboxes, all centered around the simple pleasures of everyday life. They’re engaging and allow you to freely explore and create the kind of relaxing routine you enjoy.
My Summer Car
It’s Not Just About Cars, Believe It Or Not
As a Finn, I have to mention My Summer Car – it perfectly captures the feeling of a relaxed ’90s summer in the beautiful Finnish countryside. The game lets you experience things like barbecuing, grabbing a bite and a beer at the local pub, and taking care of everyday life – from using the bathroom to cleaning up. And of course, no Finnish summer is complete without a sauna!
As you begin to modify and improve your car – a popular pastime in rural Finland – you’ll discover this game is about more than just vehicles. It’s a simulation of a Finnish summer and the lifestyle that comes with it, all presented with a lovely retro style and classic Finnish wit. I don’t know much about cars, but I found the game incredibly charming and nostalgically quirky – I really enjoyed it!
The Elder Scrolls 5: Skyrim
Your Daily Routine In The Elder Scrolls Universe
Despite its epic scope, Skyrim can be a surprisingly relaxing game. It really draws you into its world, letting you feel like you’re simply living a life within it. You can purchase homes throughout the province, or even build your own with the Hearthfire expansion.
The little details – crafting potions, forging weapons, cooking meals, hunting, and gathering ingredients – really make you feel like a resident of this world, not just a hero. You can even get married, fish, and farm. There’s no rush to do anything; you’re free to simply live in one of Bethesda’s most captivating and immersive worlds.
Lake
A Relaxing Walking Sim About The Mundane
Games that prioritize a slower pace, often called ‘walking sims,’ are particularly good at capturing the feeling of ordinary life, and Lake is a prime example. It’s a charming trip back to the 1980s, both visually and in its atmosphere, as you play as Meredith Weiss returning to her hometown.
You play as a mail carrier in the charming town of Providence Oaks, getting to know the residents through friendly chats and deliveries. These relationships will ultimately influence Meredith’s big decision: should she stay in her beloved hometown or move back to the city? It’s a heartwarming, cozy experience very much like a Hallmark movie, offering a relaxing and delightful slice-of-life gameplay experience.
Stardew Valley
Daily And Weekly Errands Keep You A Busy Farmer
Despite its simple, pixelated graphics, Stardew Valley is a surprisingly captivating game with a lot of depth. You play as someone escaping the corporate world to take over their grandfather’s farm and settle in the town of Pelican Town. You’ll quickly get to know the residents, learn their habits, and help them out with tasks and requests they post on a community board.
As you take on tasks like mining, farming, fishing, and shopping for everyone, you quickly fall into a regular daily and weekly rhythm. For example, Fridays mean visiting Krobus and checking out what the Traveling Merchant has to offer. Remembering that Pierre’s shop is closed on Wednesdays is another one of those details. It’s these little things that really make the game’s world feel alive and like a real community.
The Sims 4
Life Simulation Galore
If you want a game that truly feels like everyday life, look no further than The Sims 4 and the entire Sims series. As a life simulation game, it focuses on creating and managing daily routines – or choosing to throw them out the window! You design your Sims, build or buy them a home, and then take care of their needs and help them achieve their goals.
Life throws daily challenges at us – at work, in relationships, or even just things like getting sick or feeling uninspired. This game captures that unpredictable flow, encouraging you to react to your Sims’ feelings in the moment, mirroring the ups and downs of everyday life.
Project Zomboid
Mundane Retro Reality In The Apocalypse
While Project Zomboid is set in a zombie apocalypse, it surprisingly feels very ordinary. The game focuses on the details of survival – things like cooking, food preservation, keeping your car fueled, getting enough sleep, finding ways to stay entertained, and treating injuries. These tasks, repeated over time, create a surprisingly realistic and routine experience.
Life after the disaster isn’t easy. Even basic things, like getting a good night’s sleep or cooking a meal, require effort and attention. You’ll need a pillow to sleep well, and you can’t just leave food in the oven or it will burn. Soon, these little details will create a surprisingly realistic, and slightly unsettling, experience – it’ll feel like you’re living in a 90s zombie film.
Animal Crossing: New Horizons
Real-time Island Experience
As a huge fan of Animal Crossing: New Horizons, I love how it feels like a real part of my day. Because the game runs on real-time, it really captures that sense of a daily routine. It’s not exactly my actual life, of course, but there’s something so comforting about checking in each day to take care of my island, chat with my villagers, and see what’s new at the shops. It’s just… cozy!
You can visit your friends’ islands and spend time together, making the game feel like a real-life hangout that changes with the seasons and time of day. Just avoid anything that messes with the game’s time system to keep the experience immersive.
inZOI
Highly Realistic-Looking Life Simulation
Similar to The Sims 4, inZOI stands out for letting players freely engage in everyday activities. It’s KRAFTON’s newest major project, currently available in Early Access, and it’s already impressive thanks to its detailed visuals and complex gameplay. Plus, it’s a beautiful game for taking screenshots. Players can create realistic routines by setting daily schedules for each character, or ‘Zoi’, within a household.
The game lets you automatically send characters to places like the gym, beach, or cafes on a set schedule, so you don’t have to do it repeatedly. As it’s a life simulation, it also includes everyday activities like sleeping, eating, spending time with loved ones, working or studying to earn money, and enjoying restaurants and cafes.
Minecraft
Eat, Sleep, Build, Mine, Farm, And Repeat
Surprisingly, Minecraft can capture the feeling of everyday life, even though it’s a fantastical game. This is especially true in Survival Mode, and even more so in Hardcore Mode where your character has permanent death. Once you’ve established a base, the game involves a lot of small tasks and activities that create a real sense of routine.
The game involves a lot of building, raising animals for food, cooking, mining for materials, and crafting weapons and armor. It also has RPG elements, though they aren’t entirely realistic. What really stands out is the focus on everyday tasks, made even better by the charming music and a relaxing gameplay style that lets you simply slow down and enjoy the world.
