Halo Moves To Unreal Engine 5 With Multiple Games In Development

As a long-time Halo fan with memories of Master Chief etched into my gaming DNA, I can’t help but feel a mix of excitement and nostalgia as I absorb this news about the future of Halo. The shift from 343 Industries to Halo Studios signals a new era for one of the most iconic franchises in gaming history.

Starting from now, all upcoming Halo games will be developed using Unreal Engine 5, with a fresh studio within Xbox overseeing their creation, in essence. On Sunday evening, during the Halo World Championships, Microsoft revealed that 343 Industries will transition into Halo Studios, symbolizing a “new era” for the Halo series.

In addition, it was revealed that Halo Studios has multiple games in development.

Why The Change To Unreal Engine 5 For Halo?

As a dedicated gamer, if you truly dissect the epic saga that is Halo, it’s clear there have been two unique phases. The first phase, masterfully crafted by Bungie. The second phase, under the skilled hands of 343 Industries. Now, I can feel the excitement in the air – our fans are eager for more! So, we’re not just aiming to streamline development, but to rewrite the recipe of Halo game creation. Today marks the beginning of a new chapter in this legendary journey.

To facilitate this shift, the Halo series will no longer rely on the Slipspace Engine tailored for Halo Infinite. Instead, this transition to Unreal Engine 5 for Halo means that developers can focus on crafting new games rather than maintaining the engine. This switch provides advantages for developers and ultimately leads to more impressive games for fans due to the benefits Unreal Engine 5 offers in development.

In simpler terms, Chris Matthews from the studio mentioned on Xbox Wire, “With all due respect, certain parts of Slipspace have been around for about 25 years.” Even though our team at 343 Industries has consistently worked on it, there are features in Unreal that Epic Games has been enhancing for a while, which we can’t access in Slipspace. Trying to replicate these would have required substantial time and resources.

Originally, our attention was heavily skewed towards establishing a conducive environment for serving Halo Infinite successfully. However, transitioning to Unreal Engineering enables us to channel all our efforts into crafting numerous top-tier experiences instead.

According to Halo Studios, they plan to launch their upcoming games only when they believe they’ve reached a point of maturity and readiness for public consumption.

What are your thoughts on the transformations at Halo Studios, previously known as 343 Industries? Are you looking forward to Halo switching to Unreal Engine 5 and what it might mean for its future? Feel free to share your opinions here or in our TopMob Forums.
